Parties and young people – an important notice from Victoria Police

There is no higher priority than the safety and wellbeing of our children; for parents, for teachers and for schools. Last week I received an email from Victoria Police that schools have been asked to send out to their communities. It relates to strong police concern about a recent trend in party organisation and the safety of young men and women attending those parties.

This particularly worrying trend – known as ‘pop up parties’ – is currently occurring in Melbourne’s Eastern and South Eastern suburbs, originating via social media messaging. Victoria Police are receiving reports of crimes and harms occurring to young people (including people under 16 years old) at these events. The party details are circulated on social media, with the location of each one being advised at very short notice. The police have asked that the following is sent out to our school community under the heading of “Victoria Police concerns around harm occurring to young people”

“Dear Parents/Carers of Students (Years 7-12),

I am writing to inform you that we have received information from Victoria Police about local ‘pop-up’ parties and social gatherings being organised via social media which are unsafe for the young people attending. These parties are being hosted in private homes, abandoned buildings and public halls across south eastern and eastern Melbourne.

  •  Victoria Police acknowledges that many young people are also attending safe parties, however, Victoria Police strongly suggest the following, to ensure young people attend local gatherings safely:
  • Talk to your children and always be mindful of where they are;
  • Be vigilant around monitoring all of your child’s social media accounts (consider there may be multiple accounts) and look online at any events your child wants to attend;
  • Investigate any party your child is attending, and be satisfied of where your child is and who they are with. If a party location is unknown one or two weeks prior to a party date, this may be of concern.
  • Underage alcohol drinking and drug use is not recommended.

If you have any information that may assist police, phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

If you are concerned that your child has been the victim of a sexual assault and may require support, please contact Centre Against Sexual Assault on 1800 806 292.”

With our students and children’s safety in mind, this is of particular concern as we approach both the ‘schoolies’ period and of course also the regular summer holidays. Be assured that the School will contact families if we become aware of any event of concern that may potentially put Tintern students at risk and it would be helpful if similarly, any parent who becomes aware of any event of concern would inform the School by letting their Head of School know. Any information will of course be treated absolutely confidentially. Thank you for your support with this.

Music Matters

Tintern plays up a storm at the Maroondah Festival

On Sunday 6 November, the Tintern Grammar Concert Band and the Saxophone Ensemble performed at the Maroondah Festival. Performing at the Youth Stage, Town Park in Croydon, Tintern was one of the few schools performing during the festival, as well as other performers such as a Pipe Band, choirs and dancers. We were very thankful that it didn’t rain; however, it was quite challenging at times due to the gusty winds. Luckily, our pegs held our music fairly securely and Mrs Clarke managed to hold her score and conduct us at the same time. The Concert Band played several pieces that we have been rehearsing lately; March of the Aliens, Witches Brew and Wombat Shuffle. The Saxophone Ensemble performed The Pink Panther, an Irish Suite and Take on Me. It was great to have the support of our families, teachers and friends in the audience, and afterwards we all enjoyed the rest of the festivities at the Maroondah Festival!

Creativity sometimes stimulates thoughts of cheddar cheese!

The 8/9/10 Music Elective Concert was held on the evening of Wednesday 9 November as a way to showcase the creative efforts of the members of the elective music classes this year. There was a wide variety of group performance pieces, ranging from a sung Elizabethan Madrigal to a modern percussion ensemble. The Year 10s’ major assignment of the semester was an open-ended project, for which a few students decided to arrange pieces for small groups. Charlotte Menagh arranged a mashup of themes from Harry Potter, The Hobbit and Sherlock for members of the class and Holly Fryer arranged a pop song for the Clementson String Quartet. In addition, all members of the Year 10 class performed a solo.

The Year 8/9 music elective class, ‘Music Technology Beyond the Classroom’ spent a portion of their class time this semester composing original pieces for the Federation Bells in Birrarung Mar. We heard four original compositions on the night and informed the audience that all the compositions will be performed in situ on a Saturday morning in the future. Other Year 8/9 items were small group items and a class arrangement of ‘Let her Go’ by Clarisse Liew.

A more unexpected item in the program was Hollis Huang’s original composition, ‘Cheddar Cheese Cubes’ – an example of Electronic Dance Music that was intended to simulate the experience of eating cheese!

We would like to thank Ms Bortolussi and Mr Kidd for supporting our musical endeavours. We have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to research and deliver projects focussed on subjects of our own choosing.

We thank all the parents and friends who supported this performance event and hope that they have an enhanced appreciation of the range of teaching and learning that occurs in the Music Electives at Tintern Grammar.

Sport Matters

Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championships

A number of Tintern students competed in the Victorian All Schools Athletic Championships at Lakeside Stadium last weekend with great success.

Gary Haasbroek (Year 12) won the U/18 Boys 110m Hurdles and U/18 Long Jump, he also finished second in the U/18 Javelin and fourth in the U/18 Discus.

Corey Dickson (Year 8) won the U/15 Boys 3000m Walk and competed in the 1500m.

Karly Rosenbrock (Year 11) finished second in the U/17 Girls 3000m.

Paul Haasbroek (Year 8) finished third in the U/15 Boys Triple Jump and fifth in both the U/15 Hurdles and U/15 Long Jump.

Breanna Turnbull finished fifth in the U/16 Girls Javelin and Tess Power (Year 8) competed in the U/15 Girls 400m.

Competitors who finished 1st or 2nd in the U/14, U/16 & U/18 age groups and 1st in the U/15 & U/17 age groups qualify for the National All Schools Championships in Canberra on December 2-4.

Competitors who finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd qualify for the National Junior Championships in Sydney in March next year.

Congratulations to all these students and best wishes for the upcoming athletics season.

Victorian School Cycling Championships

Congratulations to Courtney Snowball (Year 10) and Mitchell Snowball (Year 7) who recently competed in the Victorian School Cycling Finals at Bendigo.

Courtney finished 1st in the U/17 Girls Mountain Bike section and 1st in the series, whilst Mitchell finished 3rd in the U/15 Boys Mountain Bike section and 3rd in the series. Both also tried their hand at the Road Race with great success, Mitchell finishing 2nd in the U/15 Boys and Courtney 3rd in the U/17 Girls.

Tintern competes at final Interschool Show Jumping round for 2017

It was fantastic to see three of our senior team members competing at the final round of the Interschool Show Jumping Series for 2016. Darcee, Jim and Madi all took their horses out to Ayr Hill to earn points for Tintern in the series. It was heartening to see and feel the level of support that the riders offered each other, as this family value is at the core of our team. Though nobody made the placings this time round, it is encouraging to see the combinations consistently competing and improving with each outing. Whether their goal was to go clear, have fun or just work on show jumping skills, all three riders represented the school extremely well and should be proud of their efforts. We hope that in the following months and into next year the team will attend more competitions as a collective and continue to demonstrate great sportsmanship and love of horses.

Congratulations to one of our youngest … and to one of our oldest student riders!

Odette McCallum (Year 3) entered the Neatest Pony and Rider Photo Competition in the most recent edition of Horse Deals Magazine and placed second with a photo of herself on ‘Candy Kane’ taken when she won the Combined Training section of the Victorian Interschool Horse Trials earlier this year. Congratulations, Odette!

Eliza Harvey (Year 11), one of our Equestrian Captains, also recently entered and won a competition in which the first prize was an Eventing Clinic with Captain Mark Phillips. Yes, this is the Captain Mark Phillips of British Royal connections and Munich Olympic gold medallist in three-day eventing – fame.

A pre-clinic interview with Eliza can be found in the latest edition of Horse Deals.

Eliza will participate in the clinic on Thursday 17 November. We look forward to reading her report on this exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Community Matters

Year Level Functions

Thank you to all our parent reps who continue to organise social opportunities for our families. Please show your support and attend the organised functions when you can, it is a great way to catch up on all the news in your children’s year level.

Parent representatives

What are they? What do they do?

Now is the time to consider a role as a Year level parent representative for next year.

Year level parent reps are a vital link between the school and parents at each Year level. Each level or class should have at least one representative who will make themselves known to other parents across the year. The primary responsibility of the parent reps is to co-ordinate parent social activities throughout the year. The Year level parent rep should make every effort to meet all the parents at their Year level and should a new family arrive during the year, the Parent Rep is asked to make contact with the family, invite them to have coffee and meet other members of the year level. The parent and friend groups or the Community Relations Office may call upon the parent Reps to assist with sourcing volunteers for events or activities. We also encourage our parent reps to be available to answer any questions from our new incoming 2017 families. If this sounds like you please call or email Di Lacey in the Community Relations Office.

Munch with the Musos is Tintern’s Friends of Music fabulous end of year social event. It is a fundraising brunch which brings the Tintern community together to celebrate the end of the year with a Christmas themed concert from the school’s talented ensembles. Kinky Boots – tickets available for Sunday 12 February 2017 3pm show

30 tickets have been pre booked for the ‘Kinky Boots’ musical on Sunday February 12 (at 3pm) for our Year 7 cohort and there are a few tickets now available for anyone to purchase.

The show will run at Her Majesty’s on Exhibition St and discounted tickets are available for $124 each. Payment will be due by December 1.

Kinky Boots is the very popular musical which sends positive messages on self-belief, not being judgemental of others, strive and you can succeed etc etc. Team that up with a sensational soundtrack by Cyndi Lauper, and you have a multi award winning hit!  It is recommended for ages from 10 and up. 

Tickets have already been offered to the year 7 cohort and there are only a few left.

Volunteer thank you evening

A wonderful night was had at the recent Volunteer Thank You Evening. Mr. Fry welcomed and formally thanked volunteers and supporters from all areas of our school; parent groups, friends groups, board members, classroom reading and activities, art room assistance, fairs, working bees and many many more. Mr Fry extended a special thank you to a number of community members who no longer have children or a direct connection with the school but continue to assist as volunteers by giving their time, energy and skills to various areas around the school; Michelle Shafto, Joy Ashfield, Alex Wakeley, Mike Blood, Carol Robertson and John Capper. The school gains so much from their generosity. We also take this opportunity to acknowledge other past parents who could not attend the evening and also continue to help long after their children have finished School; Vicky Wilks, Sharyn Frisby, Kathy Paige Kylie Spears, Kate and Warren McDonald. We cannot overlook and acknowledge the generous sponsors and donors in our community who financially support the many activities and fundraising events. And finally our past student bodies who also give their time, energy and expertise in providing opportunities for our alumni to reconnect and network, particularly acknowledging; Lynne Franke, Sharon Fox, Doris Rose, Marlene Bevan, Jenny Brown, Olivia Green, Dani Cox, Ivan Yeung and Dean Vescio. The Tintern Parent Group have conducted a review of the volunteer-run second hand book sale and concluded, due to the difficulties in running such a big operation with volunteers and the service advantages that an external provider can offer, it would be best to move to an external provider rather than continue to run it from the school. If you would like to sell any of your child’s text books or buy any second hand for next year we have sourced a reliable trader, Lilydale Books, who will be able to provide more buy and sell opportunities than we could at school. louis-gysbertsLouis Gysberts YG 2008: Louis came to Southwood in Grade 6. He excelled at mathematics and science and was enthusiastically involved in many sports, musicals, choirs and the leadership team. After graduating from Tintern Schools in 2008, Louis went on to study Aerospace Engineering at Monash University. He was a member of many university groups and clubs and amerced himself in university life. He studied for five years and spent three months backpacking throughout Europe. In his last year of study, he completed his final year thesis with the Monash Unmanned Aerial Systems team to develop a search and rescue autonomous drone for the UAV Outback Challenge in Queensland. He achieved high academic results and consequently received honors of his year and was inducted into the Golden Key International Honors Society.

After graduating from university, he was keen to start his career in engineering. Within months of graduating from Monash, he landed a full time position as an Engineer at Planet Innovation, an engineering consultancy firm. He worked on many projects at Planet Innovation including a smart IVF incubator to streamline the IVF industry in Australia and make IVF more affordable and accessible. After working at Planet Innovation, he became a mechanical engineer at Mini FAB, a medical engineering consultancy firm. He is currently working on many projects with clients and investors in the US and Europe regions. At the moment he is developing a rapid point of care diagnostic system for infectious diseases such as Ebola, various cancer diagnostic devices and the Monash Vision Group’s direct to brain bionic eye to bring sight back to the blind. He has utilized his skills in 3D printing and other rapid prototyping techniques to deliver world first solutions to some of the most difficult engineering challenges. He enjoys working on projects to better the living conditions and quality of life for some of the most disadvantaged people on the planet.

He hopes to someday own and operate his own modern and innovative consultancy firm. He still has a passion for aviation, astronomy and drone technology and still routinely builds and pilots drones in his personal time.

TPG (Tintern Parent Group) News

​Hello fellow parents and happy spring!

We, the Tintern Parents Group (TPG) would like to thank everyone for their participation and support in the Mango Fundraiser this year and all the other fundraising and friendraising events and activities throughout the year. The Mango fundraiser is set to be a clear success as we’ve exceeded expectations with a total of 270 trays ordered! 

As you may have heard, the Junior School Boys and Girls will enjoy making/decorating gingerbread on the second to last day of school.  It certainly is a fun project for the children.  If you’d like to help out, please let us know by emailing parentgroup@tintern.vic.edu.au .

 *All Parents, please note: The TPG will again be organising a Parents luncheon on the last day of school, Thursday 8 December. Last day of school assemblies will have many parents on campus and the luncheon serves as a great opportunity to come together before year end.  It will be held from 11am – 2pm in between assemblies; all the details and bookings here through trybooking. We look forward to seeing you then!

The Tintern Parents Group have now updated a limited number of photo albums, large enough to hold the school photos provided by SchoolPix. They feature the Tintern Grammar Logo printed in silver on the front cover and come complete with 10 transparent 30cm x 30cm sheet inserts, plus a CD holder insert which holds 8 discs. Prep receive a visit from well-known author Adam Wallace

The Preps have had a wonderful time of learning this past term. They were introduced to the book written by Adam Wallace called ‘How to Catch the Tooth Fairy’.  The students were asked what they thought they would do with the tooth fairy. Through the STEAM program the children also made a castle to trap the fairy or give her a home…  The last lesson culminated in meeting the author Adam Wallace who then presented them with an individually signed copy of the book for each student.

Sincere thanks go to Mrs Healey, Mrs Wagner and Mrs Thomson for all their help to organise this fun and very valuable learning opportunity.

With all Senior College year levels now being involved in final examinations, there is a clear and total focus on academic studies at this time of year. Most Year 12 VCE students have now finished their final examinations as have many Year 12 IB students. Following the completion of the final Year 12 examinations we have our Valedictory Dinner at Leonda by the River on Tuesday 22 November.

Remembrance Service on 11 November at 11am

On 11 November Years 3-9 students observed a minute’s silence in honour of the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. It was a moving tribute ably led by our Year 6 Flag Captain Keira Vandenbroeck, Girls’ Junior School Captain Kelsey Paterson and Middle school Captains. A wreath was laid by our Vice-Principal Jason McManus and the flags were flown at half-mast. We reflected on how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful and safe country.  We also acknowledged the brave men and women who are currently serving in the forces.

News From Year 10

A big thank you to the Year 10 students who have largely vacated the Anderson Centre to allow the Year 12 VCE and IB examinations to continue with silent surroundings over the past 2 weeks. The Year 10 students who used last Friday 11 November to study at School received praise from staff as they prepared for their own examinations.

The year continues to be busy with opportunities for Year 10 students to participate in the Social, METEC and the Level 2 First Aid courses. At our last Level Assembly prior to the study day, we acknowledged the work of Mrs Wang’s Mentor group which has been collecting batteries and mobile phones for recycling, Mr Scherini’s Mentor group has been collecting donations for the Coldstream Animal Aid and Mr Lo’s Mentor group has been collecting goods for the Croydon Salvation Army store.

The students have been provided with information relating to the Year 10 into 11 transition lessons from Tuesday 22 to Monday 28 November inclusive and it is important that they check their e-mails and the Portal for information relating to the timetable and room allocation for this program. Full summer school uniform is required for each of these days.

Finally, congratulations to Matthew Dellavedova who has been selected to play as a wild card entry in the Sydney Pro-Futures tennis tournament in Sydney this week and he has all our best wishes for this wonderful opportunity to further his tennis career.

News From Year 11

Our Year 11s are undertaking their Semester 2 examinations across this week and are reminded that they will need to be at school by 8:30 am on Monday 21 November for their compulsory Fit 2 Drive seminar. All students in the year level will take part in workshops and presentations with local police and firemen about the responsibilities and obligations of being new drivers on the road.  Safety, common sense, and how to avoid potentially dangerous situations are the foci for this vital workshop.  Dismissal will be by 1pm on the day and they are allowed to come to school in free dress on this day only.

We will then see them all at School for Roll Call the next morning, Tuesday 22 November, in full school uniform, to start their five day transition program. This will conclude the following Monday 28 November at the end of the day. Holiday homework will be provided for all subjects and students are reminded that this homework is the first component of their Year 12 study for 2017 and will be due at the commencement of the 2017 academic year.

All secondary section families are advised that if a student feels ill during the day at School they are required to attend Sick Bay where a decision will be made by one of our First Aid Officers on whether they should sign out as ill. Parents will be contacted by Sick Bay if this is the case. Students are aware of this requirement and have recently been reminded of the correct procedure.

Please note, if a student brings a signed note from home advising their Pastoral Mentor that they have a medical appointment to attend later in the day, there is no need for the student to attend Sick Bay before being collected to go home by her/his parents in this situation.

Signing-in at Head Space/the School Counsellor’s Office

Students have also recently been reminded that if they attend the School Counsellor’s Office and/or the Head Space room at the Counselling area, there is a “swipe device” which records their attendance – thus, enabling the School to be aware that they are safely on site while maintaining their confidentiality.

Past student news – Julie Battisti (YG 2002)

Julie Battisti graduated from Tintern Grammar in 2002 and ANU School of Art in 2006 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in painting. She chose ANU for its focus on practical techniques and the option of taking a conjoint degree (Julie also holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in International Relations and Italian). Julie’s love of fine art grew from her experiences at Tintern Grammar where she took refuge from teenage life amongst the coffee and heaters of the art department, and realised she had found her home. 

At the end of 2014 she graduated with a Graduate Diploma of Education from Monash University, and volunteered in the Visual Art & design department at Tintern Grammar, assisting with the art resource library and exhibitions. Julie is now teaching years 7 to 12 at Lauriston Girls School.

Both her graduation exhibition Indulgence (2006) and Bedscapes (2010) explored sensual tactile smooth layered subjects against stark clear backgrounds on large canvases.

Julie has developed her abilities in ceramics, photography, drawing and printmaking.  However, her preferred medium is oil painting, because it is a relatively fluid medium which allows her to blend rich smooth layers of colours and shades to present texture and light – as well as being very forgiving when she decides part of a work isn’t up to scratch.  With the limitless possibilities of oil painting in mind, Julie has the following quote pinned to her studio wall:

Her latest exhibition is at Cambridge Studio Gallery, Collingwood , Melbourne from November 19- December 4.

Maksis Darzins – shortlisted for Top Designs 2017 Exhibition

Some very exciting news from the Visual Arts & Design Department!

We are very proud to announce that Maksis Darzins, Visual Communication Design student, has just been shortlisted for the annual Top Designs Exhibition to be held at the Melbourne Museum in 2017.

Top Designs showcases exemplary student works from produced for VCE Media, Design and Technology, Food and Technology, Systems Engineering, Visual Communication Design, and VET Interactive Digital Media.

All works are accompanied by folios and design plans that document the students’ development of ideas, production stages, client feedback and evaluation of results. The strength of this unique exhibition is the opportunity to view developmental folios and design plans alongside the finished work – from furniture to fashion and film to food menu plans.

Year 3-6 House Athletics

On Friday 4 November the Years 3-6 girls participated in their annual house athletics competition. The weather was perfect for the day and the girls competed well in all events. After the 800m races and field events, the scores were very close between all houses so track events would be vital in determining the overall results. The girls gave their best effort for their houses and their house spirit was evident as there was lots of encouragement and barracking which was fantastic to see.

Factis Non Verbis

The last 10 days have certainly been memorable for our boys, with a range of activities and experiences.

We were delighted to welcome back our Year 5 Boys from their Surf Camp at Phillip Island last week, on Wednesday our Year 6 boys each flew a Piper Warrior plane, last Thursday our Year 2s had a wonderful ‘Dads and Lads’ evening, our Preps and 1s had their special  PJ Party Friday evening, and this week, our Year 3 and 4 boys head to Camp Manyung for their 3 day camp.

Our smaller community and class sizes enable us to be offer unique experiences for our boys, and ensure that every boy is able to fully participate in all opportunities offered. Our upcoming P-2 Fun Swimming and Year 3-6 House Carnival will see every boy, regardless of ability,  participate in at least 6 events…this certainly builds upon House spirit, and self-esteem.

In our Assemblies, we have discussed the Presidential election, focussing upon the leadership characteristics of Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. Prior to the result, we made reference to comments that didn’t reflect our Compass values, and discussed why these were inappropriate. Post the election, we have looked at both Donald Trump’s acceptance speech, focussing on his apparent graciousness, his praise of Hilary Clinton, “She fought very hard. Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country. I mean that very seriously.” and his comment, “For those who have chosen not to support me, of which there were a few, I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so we can work together and unite our great country.”

We did all agree that we hoped this as a case of Factis Non Verbis!

Our focus on Hilary Clinton revolved around her strength and fortitude:“I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans, …..we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.” and her role as a ‘champion’ of women… “”To all the women, and especially the young women, who put their faith in this campaign and in me: I want you to know that nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion…..someday someone will” break that “highest, hardest glass ceiling.”

Most importantly, we have endeavoured to leave our boys with a sense of hope, rather than one of doom!

Monday’s assembly also gave us the opportunity to celebrate the 125th birthday of Sir Frederick banting, co-founder of insulin….with Diabetes playing a large role in the life of two of our Junior School boys, this was a very well celebrated milestone

News from Boys’ Middle School

It’s been really great to see the boys starting to be able to be outside at lunch and recess as the weather starts to provide a bit more sunshine and warmth; it makes such a difference to everyone’s attitude and happiness when the sun is out. As the term draws to an end our boys are still working hard at completing set tasks for many subjects whilst also preparing for end of year assessments and exams. In their pastoral sessions they have been working on study techniques in order to find the best way for them to be prepared for such assessments, an important process to begin in the Middle School before they start their journey in the Senior College.

On Friday 11th we paid or respect to Remembrance Day by having our annual service underneath the flagpoles near the Junior Schools. The service was really fitting with reference to the youngest soldier know to have served for Australia being Private James Martin who lied about his age when enlisting by saying he was 18 when in fact he was 14 years and 3 months; a Year 8 boy of today. The poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ was read as well as the laying of a wreath by our Vice Principal Mr McManus, followed by the Last Post and The Ode of Remembrance.

There is still plenty of things going on for our boys and it will remain extremely busy for them right up until the 8th of December when they finish up. We have a camp for Year 9s, End of Year Program (EYP) for Year 7s & 8s, transition for Year 9 into Year 10, and then the final day activities on the 8th including assemblies, reflections and the annual Southwood Ironman. Please keep in touch with your boy’s Pastoral Mentor if you have any questions regarding the end of year.

Year 7 Chinese Excursion

On the 28th of October, the students learning Chinese went to Chinatown for the day. We started off by going to the Chinese Museum. First we learned about how the seismograph was invented and then about Jade Burial Suits. We then went downstairs and found out about the gold rush and saw the 63 metre long dragon that was used for Chinese New Year and Moomba. Next, we learnt how to make Chinese knots which was really fun. After the museum we walked to a restaurant where we ate lunch. On the menu was spring rolls, dumplings, sweet and sour pork, lemon chicken, Chinese sausages and fried rice. It was then time to go back to school. It was a really enjoyable day and we learnt a lot.

Year 8 Boy’s Billy Carts

On Wednesday 2nd November the Billy Cart Day was reintroduced to the Year 8 program. This is something that begun back on the old campus but was lost during the transition over to Ringwood East. The day involved the boys forming into groups of between 4 – 5 people and then being given a billy cart kit. The kit included all the timber pre-cut and drilled, the wheels, axels, steering rope, etc. as well as a prototype out the front that they needed to copy. This occupied the first few hours of the day as the boys discovered (through a number of mistakes early on) how exactly to put the carts together successfully. Whilst this was occurring, some members of the group were busy designing a team logo and cart decorations that were printed off to adorn their vehicle. We had awards for best logo design, best looking cart, best team uniform, etc. as well as the team that was fastest around the track. Before lunch the boys brought their carts onto the tennis courts for some practice laps and testing before the big race. We also walked the track with all participants so they were aware of the actual course and any associate obstacles or dangerous corners. Lunch was provided for them including a heap of sausages, some chocolate, a can of drink, etc. before meeting back up on the tennis courts for the official time trial laps. These laps were around a shortened tight course on the tennis courts but still tested speed, endurance and driving ability. From here the carts were allocated a grid position for the actual Grand Prix around the school. The race itself was fantastic! It took the boys outside the tennis courts, around the gym, down the bus bay (Conrod Straight), back along the paths between our two ovals, before turning back up to the tennis courts and then repeating the lap again. By the end we had a lot of very worn out boys and only a couple DNFs (did not finish) due to their cart breaking. It was a really fun day that incorporated leadership ideas, collaboration, team work, fitness, hands-on, etc., but more importantly the boys had a good time together.

News from Girls’ Middle School

As we reach the half way mark of Term 4 there’s still plenty of action to come in the Girls Middle School. On Thursday 17 November we will welcome our 2017 Year 7 students to Tintern at their final Orientation Day. It is a very exciting time for families as the girls prepare themselves for Year 7 and throughout the day the girls will get to meet their Form group and Pastoral Mentor for 2017 as well as take part in transition and House activities.

Our Year 9s are busily preparing for examinations and beyond that can look forward to Summer Expeditions 28 November – 2 December and Year 10 transition from 5-7 December.

Our Year 7 and 8 students will be taking part in the eYp or ‘End of Year Program’ from 5-7 December. Throughout the three days girls will be working in House groups on a comprehensive and engaging project. The project topics are still ‘top secret’ but there’s going to be plenty of opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills in creativity, teamwork and collaboration as well as test their thinking skills. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks!

Girls is Year 8 are currently asked to nominate for 2017 Middle School Leadership Positions. There are various positions that girls can be involved in; Middle School Captain, Middle School Vice-Captain, Middle School Leader, House Captain, Sport Captain, Music and Drama Captain and Community Service Captain. I hope to see many expressions of interest for these positions as leadership is a great opportunity for individuals to develop themselves and experience fulfilment in their school life.

Maroondah Festival

It was fantastic to see so many students representing Tintern at the Maroondah Festival on Sunday 6 November with performances from the Concert Band and Saxophone Ensemble on a glorious Spring day. It was a fabulous opportunity to showcase our students and their musical talents.

Year 9 Outdoor Education Canoe Camp

 

On the 7th of November the Year 9 Outdoor Ed class set off for a wonderful three days canoeing at Lake Eildon. We all shared so many great experiences with each other. Some of the highlights included setting up and sleeping under tarps, building camp fires and sharing a group meal where we all helped to prepare, make and cook calzone style pizzas.

Canoe camp was such an incredible experience for us to build on skills that we had learnt in class. It was a way for us to challenge ourselves as well as a way to build on our skills as a team. Due to strong wind on the first day, we had to change our plans and set up camp early. Still, this did not stop us as the following day where we chose to paddle further than any other Tintern group had paddled in a day. It was about 10 km and the feeling we had when we had achieved this was amazing. We all got to spend lots of time getting to know each other more and sharing stories. Another highlight of camp was the climb up the mountain behind our camp site. Though it was a tough climb, we persevered and took in the beautiful view from the top. We all felt extremely accomplished after we got to see how parts that we had canoed earlier. This camp was one with many fantastic opportunities and memories that will stay with us forever.

Year 7 Boys Activities

Rewarding positive behaviours is a very enjoyable task for a teacher. It is far more preferable than punishing poor choices. With this in mind, the Year 7 boys spent Wednesday afternoon having some student-led games in the Gym. The boys had a huge Skittle-ball fix, followed by a game of Swedish Bulldog (who even knew this game existed?). This afternoon of fun was in response to some very positive behaviour changes noticed in some of our Year 7 young men. A big thank you goes to the boys who helped organise the games.

Year 7 Science Excursion

The Year 7 Science excursion to Healesville Sanctuary had a focus on eliminating organism extinction. Students attended an information session about the various endangered species the Sanctuary is endeavouring to help. There are 20 endangered organisms on the list, and 8 of these are found at Healesville. Students worked in groups to learn out about their chosen endangered animals, and noted down their findings. The excursion also included attending the Spirits of the Sky presentation which is always fascinating for the audience. We were all encouraged (by the birds) to change one small habit in order to help save habitats, and that is to use toilet paper which is recycled – an easy change we can all make.

Mandy Cooke says goodbye

It is a with a mixed bag of emotions that I conclude my 6 years at Tintern this week. It is with trepidation and excitement that I move into a new phase as an educator. I plan to continue to engage in the provision of quality early childhood education in a variety of ways, all of which bring forth new environments, new people and a new daily experience that I hope will both challenge and inspire me. It is with a mix of nostalgia, sadness and fond memories that I say goodbye to Tintern. It has been such a rewarding experience working in such a close-knit team of educators and with children and families who right from the beginning I declared were ‘the best ever’! I have enjoyed watching the children grow and develop throughout the primary school and loved watching the Grade 4 girls, my first ever Pre-Prep class, return to the ELC as buddies this year. I know at times I have taken for granted the wonderful natural surrounds of Tintern Grammar and as I look at the large established gums outside my office window I know that this is something I will struggle to ever replace. I hope that I have managed to nurture a love and care for the environment in the children I have taught and that the legacy of ‘sustainability monitors’ might continue long after we’ve all moved on. The photos above capture the essence of my favourite experiences at Tintern and it is my hope that children will continue to enjoy these moments for many years to come.

Year 6 Flight Excursion

What a fantastic time we had at Coldstream Airbase last Thursday. We were so excited when we arrived and saw all the planes lined up waiting for us. Bob and Felix were our pilots this year and after a chat about what to expect and how to be safe, both on the ground and in the sky, it was the boys turn to actually co-pilot and fly the Piper Warrior aircraft. I can’t begin to explain the looks on their faces as they crossed the tarmac to board their aircraft. After a photo it was time to taxi to the runway for take-off. The weather was perfect and the experience exceptional. After the flight of a life time their expressions on landing were priceless. Some of the comments were AWESOME….AMAZING….UNBELIEVABLE ……BEST THING EVER even a WHOO HOO!!!. How lucky our boys are to have this experience and how grateful the 6D boys were to the amazing pilots who flew with them.

Year 2 Dads and Lads Evening

On Thursday November 10 the Year 2 boys enjoyed a special Dads and Lads activity evening. The boys enjoyed some time on the Tintern oval playing soccer with their dads and Mr Kenny. Despite a few mishaps the softball game commenced with no less competition between sons and fathers. Everyone enjoyed an early BBQ dinner on the deck overlooking the oval and we sang Happy Birthday to Sid’s dad, Yas. Then it was off to bowling and laser strike. The competitive streak in a few was evident as those bowling balls zoomed down the alleys and, for Mrs Sloane at least, veered off course. It was great to see the boys encouraging each other and offering advice to those of us less skilled! BUT laser strike was the most fun of all, with the boys (young and old) setting their sights on their targets and relentlessly chasing them down. Our usual school code of ‘be safe, be kind, be fair’ may have been temporarily set aside during the course of the evening! All in all it was a fabulous fun-filled Thursday night.

Year 5 Surf Camp

Excitement flew through the air as we hopped on the bus ready to go to Phillip Island Camp. When we got to camp we jumped off the bus and unpacked into our cabins. After that we got ready to go boogie boarding. When we got to YCW beach and put on wetsuits and grabbed a boogie board and ran down to the water.. There wasn’t a lot of sun, it was actually little bit cold.

The guy teaching us to boogie board told us about rips, and how to survive them. After boogie boarding we went back to the campsite and played cricket.

The next day we woke up and went to Amaze’n’ things for a couple of hours. We played mini golf and did illusions. After Amaze’n’ things we were supposed to go surfing but the tide was too high so we went boogie boarding again.

On the last day we packed up and left Phillip island to go home. On the way home we stopped at San Remo to play in the playground. While we were there we also fed the seagulls, and saw a really cute puppy. We got back on the bus and drove back to Tintern to meet our parents and headed home exhausted.

Phillip Island is my favourite camp so far.

Prep- Year 1 PJ Party

On Friday 11th November, the Preps/1 all came back to school in their pyjamas and enjoyed some fun with their classmates at a Pyjama Party. Following on from our Dr Seuss theme, we played Pin the Hat on the Cat, built Cat in the Hat towers with red cups and made our own Cat in the Hat Skewers with bananas, strawberries and marshmallows for supper. The Preps went on a treasure hunt to find green eggs and the Year 1’s followed a photo trail. The boys also enjoyed making a Dr Seuss bag or hot air balloon to take home. It was such a fun night and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award MasterChef

There are currently five students (Emily Bizley, Erin Doupe, Bianca Gering, Madeleine Howell & Carly Wansbrough) in Year 9 who have chosen ‘cooking’ as their skill for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. On Monday 24 October, Ms Bortolussi and Mr Cho organised a Master Chef Session in the kitchens during lunch and utility. The girls had to decide on a recipe, bring all their ingredients to school and cook their chosen dish in the required time. They then had to plate up their food and present it to the Maintenance Department who were most appreciative of the delicious savoury and sweet treats provided by the girls. Mr Cho checked their preparation and cleaning up skills as well as taste testing everything for quality control purposes! Cooking is a great skill to learn and all girls have commented on how much they have improved their skills in this area. I am sure that their families are most appreciative as well. Below are some comments from the girls who participated.

This year I am completing my Bronze Duke of Ed Award. We have to choose a physical, a skill, a community service and an adventurous journey. For my skill I chose cooking. I chose this because I love cooking for everyone around me and thought it would enable me to constantly cook and improve my food. My goal for cooking this year was to see how many dishes I could make that were different to experience a variety of foods.

I believe I have achieved this goal by changing or adding to recipes to observe any differences in taste. As many people chose to do cooking as their skill, we organised a little MasterChef session where everyone came and cooked a dish that was then served to the Maintenance Department.

The dishes that we served were chocolate mousse, both sweet and savoury scones, Monte Carlos, pizza twists and apricot and cranberry slice. I couldn’t choose a favourite dish as they were all different but delicious.

Throughout this year I have developed better skills at making sure all the measurements were right, and have been a bit creative where possible. I have enjoyed making the variety of dishes and look forward to taking my cooking to the next level.

I chose to do cooking as my skill for the Duke of Ed because I enjoy cooking but am not the best at it. Since choosing cooking as my skill, I feel that I have achieved my goal which was to improve my cooking skills. Throughout the six months that I have been cooking, I have been creating a meal one night a week, making dinner for my family. Some of my favourite dishes that I made during this time were fried rice with lemon chicken and a beef noodle stir fry. A skill that I have developed and improved on is being able to follow recipes correctly to prepare and cook a meal.

For my skills activity I chose cooking. This involved cooking a meal or a dish once a week for my family. Most of my dishes turned out really well because I followed the recipe. Occasionally the dishes could have been a bit better if I had let them cool down for longer, or waited until they were meant to be pulled out of the oven. My favourite dishes were san choy bow and veggie stir fry because they were quick to make and tasted delicious. My least favourite thing I made was probably the melting moment biscuits because they didn’t turn out the way I’d hoped they would and were more like yoyo biscuits. I am now vegetarian and have been for a few months. This has only impacted on some dishes I have cooked but I simply make them without the meat. I chose to cook on Monday nights as no one else was home to cook that night. It was easy because I would make dinner and eat before I went to cheer leading practice and have the table set ready for my family when they got home.

At the beginning of April, we decided which activities we would like to do for the skills section of the Duke of Ed Award. I chose cooking as I enjoy cooking and it is a skill that I will need for the rest of my life. My goal was to be able to confidently cook a three course meal.

I made many different dishes throughout the award, mostly sweet and some savoury. My favourite dishes to make were lemon slice and bolognaise sauce. The main skills that I have developed during the award were confidence in using the oven and not questioning myself when I am making a meal. To test our knowledge and skills, Mr Cho organised a mini MasterChef competition between the Duke of Ed chefs.

I believe I have fulfilled my goal well. I love cooking food for my family and I enjoy trying new recipes.

Cooking as part of the Duke of Edenborough Award was a great experience for me. I learnt heaps of new skills including how to make pastry and ganache. While there were a few mishaps along the way, I had a really fun time and I think that the ‘MasterChef’ challenge at the end of the award was a fantastic way to finish off an already fabulous experience.

If you are spring cleaning, or doing a Christmas cleanout in the coming months, please keep in mind all the pre-loved items we can benefit from at the Fair next year.

Collections will begin at the start of the new year, so please set aside any of the following items:

  • Secondhand Books & Clothes, Pre-loved Toys & Sporting Goods
  • Items for Auction or any items of value that may be used as prizes.
  • Glass Jars for the Junior School Lucky Jars

NCSS Challenge

The National Computer Science School Challenge is an online programming competition run by the University of Sydney. The Challenge lasted for five weeks and students competed in one of four streams (Newbies, Beginners, Intermediate or Advanced) learning the Python programming language.

This year twenty one students from Years 5 to 10 received participation certificates. In Year 6, Madeline Hupfeld achieved a Merit certificate in the Beginners competition. Particularly notable were three students who each achieved perfect scores in their respective competitions. They were:

  • Matthew Cobb                Year 7                Newbies
  • Alex Higgins                       Year 7               Beginners
  • Annabelle McKenzie     Year 10            Intermediate

These three students are all to be highly commended for their flawless performances in solving highly challenging programming problems. Congratulations to all students who participated in the NCSS Challenge this year.
