From the Principal

A guest introduction from Mr Geoff Connor, Vice Principal – Senior College, Administration and Students

Across my 27 years at Tintern Grammar I have always been both encouraged and impressed by the wide-ranging career choices/pathways that our graduating students aim for and are accepted into: these career pathways regularly include entry into – medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science, physiotherapy, and other health careers; law; journalism; graphic and fashion design; teaching; commerce and business management; and engineering. These career choices have been clear evidence of Tintern Grammar’s ongoing commitment to support and enable our students to aim high for whatever career pathway might be their dream; to “dream big” and be the best that they can be. This support from the school both pastorally and academically goes “hand-in hand” with our underlying commitment to develop self-confidence / belief / assertiveness in our students in order that they will achieve fulfilment in their future lives. This focus on, and commitment, to personal growth were amongst the most important factors in my own family’s choice of Tintern Grammar as the most suitable School for our own two daughters.

A new initiative in this ongoing commitment to assisting our Senior students in choosing a future pathway is the Tintern Grammar Careers Night – ‘Find your Future Self’. There has been considerable interest in the evening from Year 9 to 12 families with alumni attending on the evening representing a diverse range of careers including: Environmental Management, Medicine, Law, Education, Commerce, Psychology, Allied Health industries, Sports Science, Engineering and Technology, Agriculture, Electrical Trade industry, Fashion Design, Travel and Tourism and the Visual Arts. The evening is designed to promote one-on-one interactions for students and their families. Learn more about Careers Night.

Date:                   Thursday 18 May 2017

Time:                   7.00pm – 8.30pm

Location:           CM Wood Performance Centre

Register here for this event.

Using our previously published University Entrance data from last year as a typical example, 100% of our 2016 Year 12 group who applied for Tertiary places received offers. The most common destinations for our 2016 cohort were Melbourne, Monash and RMIT Universities with the four most popular broad course areas, as indicated in the chart below, being Health Science courses, followed by courses in the Natural and Physical Sciences, and then “Society and Culture” and Engineering.

It was therefore no surprise to me as a member of the Committee which decided on this year’s awardees of our inaugural Avenue of Excellence, to see the spread of successful career pathways that our nominees have come from as a representative sample of Tintern Grammar’s now 140 year long commitment to excellence in education. We received 25 nominations and covered a myriad of  outstanding accomplishments across many fields, which have included nominees from: the Performing Arts – drama/acting, singing, performing on live stage, film, radio or television; the Visual Arts; Politics; Business; Science; elite Sport – including Olympic games representation; Community Service/Social work; Literature

The announcement of this year’s inaugural 10 inductees will be made in the coming weeks, with a special function scheduled for Saturday 9 September that our community will be encouraged to attend; with many of our inductees set to attend the function. The ten inductees will have their portrait and a summary of their career achievement installed in the Avenue of Excellence which will be positioned past the Principal’s Office on the pathway that leads to the CM Wood Centre; this positioning will create a visible display that all members of community are likely to pass on a frequent basis.

There is no doubt in my mind, that with our ongoing commitment to excellence and confidence, our future years will continue to produce a wide breadth of successful careers which will be represented in ensuing annual rounds of diversely talented inductees.

United Nation’s Youth EVATT Program

The Year 9 and 10 students involved the United Nation’s Youth EVATT program may not have achieved world peace, but they definitely broadened their understanding of the inner workings of the United Nations and learnt about the intricacies of some major global issues that plague our planet. In an environment set up to simulate the operation of the United Nations, each pair was allocated a country to research and collect evidence about their role in the global community and their stance on some current events.

This was a unique opportunity to see these controversial issues through totally new lenses and interact with a range of different perspectives. The day really heightened our understanding of the complex relationships between countries and exposed us to a new experience that called upon a variety of different skills such as negotiating with others and thinking on our feet. Overall, it was a rewarding incursion that everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed. We’d like to thank Mrs Watkins for organising the event.

Senior Girls’ Chamber Choir take first place at Boroondara Eisteddfod

On Monday evening, 15 May the Senior Girls’ Chamber Choir competed in the 18 Years and under a cappella section of the Boroondara Eisteddfod. We performed two contrasting pieces: Lineage and Tuxedo Junction. It was amazing to see the transition within the choir members before, during and after the performance. At the beginning we were a little nervous, and anxious about how well we would perform, but once we stepped on stage, emotions turned into concentration as we focused intently on our singing.

The beautiful venue (Hawthorn Arts Centre) provided great acoustics, and the voices of each choir could be heard ringing around the hall. It was an enjoyable experience to hear the other choirs perform as they sang beautifully, and were worthy entrants in the competition. Once the end-of-section announcements started, the judge left the stage at one point to double-check her results, as she was unsure about 2nd and 3rd place. This caused quite a murmur of anticipation within the audience, as we were unsure whether we were in the running for a top three placing. Eventually the second spot was revealed, and we realised that the first place had been awarded to none other than Tintern! Lucy and Lovelyn hurriedly walked up onto the stage with big smiles on their faces as they received the award on behalf of Mrs Bezaire and the choir. The adjudicator, Ms Sadler, complimented the choir on their ‘gorgeous tone across the range, diction so together and the intent so powerful’. It was an amazing night with a big celebration from the entire Chamber Choir. We are very proud of everyone. You were great ambassadors for the school and we hope that this memory will remain in your minds as a highlight of 2017!

Over 120 students bring their musical spirit to St Paul’s Cathedral

As many will be aware, on Sunday 7 May the Tintern Grammar Annual Cathedral Service was held in the impressive St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne. Many musical items were prepared for the occasion, which both created thoughtful atmospheres or supported the proceedings of the service. The Chamber Orchestra began with an introit, La Follia (Corelli). Then the school psalm, Psalm 121 (Thwaites) was played and sung by combined choirs and orchestra. The Concert Choir performed The Power of Your Love (Bullock) and the Girls Chamber Choir presented two items, Amazing Grace, which Grace Power (Year 12) led with a stunning solo, and the blessing A Clare Benediction (Rutter). The Kelson String Quartet also accompanied the litany playing Variations on a theme by Tchaikovsky (Arensky). However, the grandest piece by far was Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, sung by members of all our secondary school choirs, as well as present teachers, past teachers and alumni who came in to help out and join in the celebration. Two trumpeters Christopher Eury and Tarquin Bishop also kindly came in to join the orchestra, percussion and keyboard, playing an incredibly complicated trumpet part and further helping us to “lift the roof” (which is really quite a feat to attempt in the cathedral!) This piece was a wonderful way to bring the community together – we had a lot of fun and it was a fulfilling experience performing it in the acoustic that is St Paul’s.

A special mention goes to the music staff – Mrs Bezaire, Ms Bortolussi, Mr Kidd, Mr Veldman and Ms McKenzie, for selecting and preparing the music and all the work they put in supporting the students. A massive thankyou to everyone who put in hours of practice, planning and rehearsals to make this service very special.

Zeb Lyons, our resident bagpiper, enters and succeeds at his first competition at Haileybury

On Sunday 30 April, I competed in my first solo bagpipe contest. It was held by the Victorian Pipers’ Association at Haileybury College, Melbourne. I played in three individual contests and placed 2nd in the March contest and 3rd in the classical bagpipe music called Piobaireachd (pee-broc).

I was delighted with my achievement and I am looking forward to the next contest in Camperdown on 22nd May.

Very exciting opportunity (and coup!) for Tintern Music Department

We are very excited that we will hosting a visit from eminent Australian conductor, Ben Northey next month! Mr Northey will work with our Symphony Orchestra, including budding student conductors. This is an amazing opportunity for our staff and students to learn from a leading professional in the industry. We thank Mr Kelson for asking Mr Northey to make a visit to Tintern.

Since returning to Australia from Europe in 2006, Benjamin Northey has rapidly emerged as one of the nation’s leading musical figures.  Since 2011, he has held the position of Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and, in 2015, he became Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

He has conducted all the major Australian orchestras, the HKPO, the NZSO and Turandot for Opera Australia. In Australia, Mr Northey has made his mark through his many critically acclaimed appearances as a guest conductor with all the Australian state symphony orchestras as well as opera productions. His recordings include several orchestral releases for ABC Classics with the Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmanian, Adelaide and West Australian Symphony Orchestras.

In 2009, Northey was selected as one of three conductors worldwide to the Allianz International Conductor’s Academy where he conducted the London Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestras under the mentorship of Vladimir Jurovsky and Chritoph von Dohnanyi.

We look forward to welcoming Mr Northey to Tintern on 7 June.

Kelson Awards 2017

The Kelson and Penelope Thwaites Music Awards are now into their fourteenth year. Auditions have been completed and award recipients notified.

Our music students at Tintern are indeed fortunate to have the opportunity to audition for these awards each year, which Mr Kelson set up in 2004 in order to honour the name of his mother, Mrs Ilma Kelson, who was Director of Music at Tintern from 1958 to 1973.

Mother’s Day Stall

The Tintern Parents Group Mother’s Day Stall was once again a wonderful success. Held on Wednesday 10 May the students had a fantastic time carefully selecting gifts for the special women in their lives. Thank you to all of the amazing volunteers who gave their time in the preparation for the stall, at the stall and afterwards. It was greatly appreciated.

Cathedral Service 2017

What a great joy it was to be part of the planning and the actual service on Sunday 7 May at St Paul’s Cathedral. The theme of our Cathedral Service this year was ‘Towards the hills: past, present and future’. This theme encapsulated our 140th celebration, one where we recognise our time at Hawthorn and our move to the hills, our life here in Ringwood East and the challenges and adventures of the hills of the future, that lie before us. Our service began with Sienna Gerin and Angus Maynard, School Captains, welcoming students, staff, families, Board members and Life Governors to the service.

Our preacher for the service was the Bishop of Ballarat, The Right Reverend Garry Weatherill who spoke to us about the foundations we build our lives on, and asked us the question, ‘What will you do with your one wild and precious life?’, from the poem by Mary Oliver.

The offering was taken for the Cathy Freeman Foundation and $2,200 was collected. The Cathy Freeman Foundation was established in 2007 and exists to help Indigenous children and their families recognise the power of education and achieve their goals and dreams. A very worthy cause.

Finally, it was the supreme team effort of music students and staff, most ably led by Mrs Alison Bezaire who took us on a journey through song and music which added a great deal of depth and texture to the worship. This included The Hallelujah chorus brought together alumni, students, staff and members of the school community in an exquisite example of how music brings people together and speaks to all who are listening. Grace Powers’ solo of Amazing Grace captured the hearts of all the congregation with her amazing and soulful singing.

Thank you to all who came and participated in this service of worship and all who worked together to make it possible.

Grace and Peace

Tintern ELC BIG BREAKFAST – Wednesday 7 June 7:15-8:30am

The annual ELC big breakfast is an opportunity for the ELC to participate in an event which enables us to celebrate being a part of the school community. We invite mums, dads, brothers, sisters and all family members to take part in the event. The Breakfast this year will be our 6th year in a row. The money raised this year will go towards a charity yet to be decided.  Leading up to the breakfast and continuing on afterwards, the children will learn about caring for others and the world around them. This also links into the School Compass points of compassion and respect.

Further details about this exciting event will be given closer to the day.

ELC Songs and Scones

Yesterday the Mums of the ELC enjoyed a delightful performance from the ELC students in the 3 and 4 year classes.  It was the first time they had performed together. The audience was large and daunting but the girls and boys sang from the heart when they were singing about their Mums.  This celebration was for the Mums (or significant females in the children’s lives) and very fitting after our Mother’s Day weekend.

The Mums and guests finished off the event with some delicious scones  and homemade biscuits with a cuppa.  Thank you to Kristin De Vos, ELC Coordinator for organising such a successful event. Everyone had a terrific time.

Police Officer’s visit Tintern!

The Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 girls had a fascinating visit from two policewomen this morning to find out more about what it takes to become a member of the Police force and what opportunities and different roles are available for women. The girls had many questions to ask and enjoyed finding out about being a member of the Mounted Police, working in the Dog squad, on the divisional van, using artistic skills to help people to identify someone or even as part of the Crime squad. Their message was that Police members help us to be safe and to keep us safe in our community and the girls were strongly encouraged to follow their interests and study hard to have lots of choices for their future careers. The girls got to see some of the police equipment including the batons they carry, their handcuffs and they even got to sit in the Police car! The policewomen showed us the lights and sirens, which was a great finale to their informative visit to Tintern today! Many thanks to Mrs Mary Whitcher, who kindly organised this visit from Lyn and Julie-Anne, our wonderful policewomen.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

A sincere thank you to the Junior School Mothers and significant females in our students’ lives for coming to our inaugural Junior Schools Mothers’ Day Breakfast. This was a special time indeed bringing us all together across both Junior Schools. It was a time to reflect on our Mums and the significant females we know and all they do for us!  Most importantly the love and care they give us no matter what! The entertainment performed by our girls and boys was special. You may have listened closely to the words expressed by the children and watched their faces… it was from the heart!!  Thank you to all the staff who supported this special event:  Mrs Wagner for the delightful music; the teachers for organising the gifts and cards; all the busy staff such as Mr Kenny and Mrs Hudgell behind the scenes involved in the set up; the Maintenance and Admissions team who helped so much with the preparations; the Catering team (Alliance) who did an outstanding job to support the success of the event; Amanda Faria in Reception who developed the beautiful program.

We had a wonderful celebration with a packed CM Wood Performance Centre with all our Mums – the atmosphere was very special. It certainly meant a lot to girls and boys and will be something long remembered. How lucky are we all to take part in the event!

Mothers’ Day

Mothers’ Day Breakfast

Our annual Mothers’ Day Breakfast reached new heights as our two Junior Schools combined for a breakfast on Friday morning that saw sons AND daughters sharing a very special occasion with significant females in their lives.

Our Prep-Year 2 combined choir sang a lovely ‘tribute’ to Mothers’ Day, whilst our boys’ rendition of Hey Mum and Just The Way You Are was very special.

Taking the time to stop and reflect upon the love, support and care that is so important and so obviously provided to our boys and girls complemented, and reinforced the importance of, our S in SAIL.

Once again, I thank everyone who made our combined Mothers’ Day Breakfast such a wonderful occasion.

Mark Zuckerberg

May 14 is the birthday of Facebook founder/creator Mark Zuckerberg. In our Assembly yesterday we discussed his Aspirational rise to fame and fortune, his journey, and some of the mistakes that he made along the way.

It provided us with another opportunity to discuss ‘Cybersafety’ and appropriate choices when interacting with the digital community.

The acronym THINK, as described below, is always a strong foundation upon which our boys can make choices when using the internet and other social media.

House Music

One of my favourite events throughout the year is House Music.

Every Secondary student, for the past two months, has been rehearsing in their Houses, ready to perform two songs at our House Music Competition, to be held THIS THURSDAY 18 May, commencing at 11.45am, in the CM Wood Performance Centre.

Each House will perform the classic anthem from Les Miserables, “Do You Hear The People Sing’, and will then perform their choice song, under the theme “Songs From Stage Musicals”.

The variety and quality of these songs is wonderful, and very entertaining.

What I most enjoy, apart from the fun and energy of the actual competition, is watching our Year 12 House Leaders confidently taking on the leadership of their House, from organising songs and presentations, through to running each rehearsal. This can provide some challenges, but the growth in confidence and leadership, and the sense of fulfilment that each leader will have at the completion of the competition, is inspiring!

Parents and friends are warmly invited to join with us in the CM Wood Performance Centre this Thursday at 11.45am-12.55pm, for what is always a wonderful Secondary School event.

They were busy everyday visiting Parliament House, Questacon, Old Parliament House, The War Memorial, The Mint and Canberra Museum, as well as a host of other attractions.  A highlight of the trip was visiting the National Botanic Gardens and attending an unexpected Open Day Launch of the Botanic Gardens across Australia and New Zealand… what a buzz when we realised that the Governor General was the guest of honour.  When attending Question Time in Parliament, the girls were a little surprised at the behaviour of the politicians to say the least, and visiting Questacon’s drop slide (which was very scary!) was also a highlight.  The icing on the cake was when we arrived back in Melbourne and found an email sent to the school from a passenger on the flight coming home.

I’d just like to say, I’ve just got off the plane with a group of girls from Tintern Grammar (Canberra to Melbourne) And it struck me how amazing these girls were. They listened to the teachers (one male and two female?) And they were great to have on board. Don’t get me wrong – when I first saw the group of children at the gate I worried in case they were going to be a bit understandably excited on the plane, but I was very impressed with them all! This email isn’t anything too informative for you as I’m sure you know how much of a great job you’re all already doing, but I work with children myself and I know how difficult it can be to keep a semi-large group of children occupied during the shortest of trips, I also know how little teachers actually get praised these days. The young male teacher also did a great job (I couldn’t see much of the female teachers as I was sat at the back of the plane) at checking to make sure the children were all fine during the flight. Well done to the teachers and the children and thank you for making my flight a better experience for seeing this.

House Cross Country

On Tuesday 2 May the Annual Junior Girls’ House Cross Country Carnival was held at Tintern. This year saw a number of changes to the event with a brand new course, that was the same course the boys ran only an hour before. Also for the first time this year the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 girls had races of their own around a shorter course. Thank you to the Year 6 girls who assisted the Preps and Year 1 girls by running with them around their course. The weather was very good for the event and the girls ran extremely well on the day. The scores were close throughout the event with only 44 points separating first and last. I would like to congratulate all of the girls for giving their best effort for their House.

Congratulations to the winners of each event:

U/10 race: Elisha Sze

U/11 2 lap race: Jessica Fettell

Year 5&6 1 lap race: Eve Ferrie

U/12&13 2 lap race: Natasha Gillam

Final results of the carnival were:

1st Cross 105 points

2nd Gordon 84 points

3rd Mansfield 83 points

4th Somner 79 points

5th Watt 61 points

Congratulations to Cross who won the event for the third year in a row.

Mother’s Day Stall (ELC to Year 6)

A huge thank you to Haidee Wallace and Kate Brumley, and the team of wonderful parents who provided their spare time to run our wonderfully successful Mother’s Day Stall last week. The girls/boys certainly enjoyed their shopping and I am sure that the Mums enjoyed their presents! It is events like these that really make our community very special indeed! This year we had two stalls so that all part-time children in the ELC could participate in this fun activity.

From Seed to Table

The Year 1 and 2 boys now visit the Farm together once a week. Our goal this term is to establish a productive vegetable garden and tend it in the hope of being able to harvest some produce that we can then cook with. From seed to table!

As a testament to ‘many hands make light work’ we were able to weed our garden bed in under an hour! So in one afternoon the garden bed went from this…

To this…

And our hands looked like this…

We will keep you posted on our progress throughout the next few months.

Boys’ Middle School News

A very big thank you to all the ‘mums’ out there! This is as genuine as it can be because I know too well how challenging the role of a parent can be, and I can see (I’m not there yet myself) that mothering a teenage boy can be even harder! I have no doubt that there would be many times when you feel as though you are taken for granted, that your messages are falling on deaf ears, and that what used to be a sweet, friendly 8 year old boy has suddenly morphed into a testosterone fuelled, peer focussed ‘teenager’ who takes his mum for granted!

I want to take this opportunity to say Happy Mothers’ Day to all of you on behalf of your son(s). Mainly because I (and all staff here at Tintern Grammar) see what an immense amount of work you all put into caring, helping and guiding your young men. We appreciate the connection you have made with the school and the understanding that we will work together to ensure we are all doing what is best to have your son(s) becoming fine young men.

Below is an article that I read recently from a blogger that highlights some ideas about what a teenage boy needs from his mum. It’s a quick read and I’m sure you would agree with many of the points presented.

I hope you had a great day on Mothers’ Day and that there was an opportunity for you to be recognised for all that you do.

Girls’ Middle School News

As we near the halfway mark of the term it’s a great opportunity to look back at the many and varied events that have taken place so far. Last week we did just that during our Combined Middle School Assembly. Our Middle School Assemblies are an opportunity for students to come together as a community, celebrate their successes and achievements and promote upcoming events. Events

It was fantastic to see so many students and families at our Annual Cathedral Service at St Paul’s Cathedral, a wonderful community event. We have hosted a United Nations Forum, had students compete at the EISM Athletics Championships, as well as a great Twilight Concert.

This week is certainly one to look forward to as we showcase student talent at the Small Ensembles Concert on Wednesday and our House Music Performance on Thursday at 11.40am-12.55pm. We welcome back Alumni on Thursday 18 May to speak to students (and parents/guardians) in Year 9-12 about their careers and studies at the ‘Careers Night – Find your Future Self.’

13 Reasons Why

I’m sure many parents are aware of the significant interest over recent weeks in the Netflix series ’13 Reasons Why’. The show has not only been a topic of discussion amongst young people but has also had significant media coverage due to concerns from Mental Health Organisations and spokespeople for the wellbeing of adolescents. With a MA15+ rating, the series is aimed at teenagers and depicts a young woman who dies by suicide. Mental health experts have expressed significant concerns about the graphic nature and content of the series, its glorification of suicide and failure to promote positive, proactive and effective help-seeking behaviours. Headspace, a well-known mental health organisation has issued a warning about the show https://www.headspace.org.au/news/dangerous-content-in-13-reasons-why/ I strongly encourage you to have conversations about the show with your daughters. Even if your daughter has not seen the program, it is likely that she has read or heard others talk about it. Mental Health First Aid Australia (MHFA) also suggests that “…it’s important for the adults around them to be ready to talk to them about the content, and about what they should do if they or one of their friends needs help”. Conversations such as these can be hard to navigate and the MHFA website provides a list of discussion points about the program as well as advice regarding how to broach the topic of suicide https://mhfa.com.au/news/2017-04-21/32544/resources-adults-and-young-people-watching-netflix-tv-show-13-reasons-why

Semester 1 Examinations and the GAT

As outlined by Mrs Tsai Bove, all Year 12 students in Victoria and all Year 11 VCE students who are undertaking a Unit 3/4 VCE subject, are scheduled to sit for the GAT (General Achievement Test) on Wednesday 14 June.

The GAT is a single 3-hour test consisting of multiple parts – 2 writing tasks and 70 multiple choice questions. It is scheduled within the hours of 9.15am – 1.30pm; this timing is crucial and allows for placing students in strict examination number order and checking of equipment prior to entry into the examination rooms. The GAT tests students’ general knowledge and skills in: written communication; mathematics, science and technology; and, humanities, the arts and social sciences.

The GAT is used as a means to check VCE external assessments against school-based assessments and is also used to compare IB performance against VCE performance; it is the basis by which a conversion of overall IB is made into an ATAR.

Our Years 10 and 11 students have their Semester 1 examinations scheduled in the week of Monday 5 June through to Friday 9 June. Our Years 10 and 11 Co-ordinators and the Pastoral Mentors will be providing guidance on getting organised in preparation for the examinations and on how to “work smart”. Further information on the timing of the Semester examinations will be forwarded shortly to students and families by the Year Level Co-ordinators.

Many students will have commenced their own revision and our Year 10s will no doubt draw on the tips provided by Elevate Education and summarised by Mrs Ruckert.

In addition, I am providing the following summary of advice to assist in reducing anxiety prior to, and during, examinations:

Recommended conditions for Study

  • Adequate light, ventilation, comfortable working temperature and space
  • Use of a consistent workplace
  • Sit on a comfortable chair at a desk or table
  • Keep both noise and visual distractions to a minimum
  • Work while you are “fresh”, not when tired

Fitness

  • Physical fitness is important in order to work well
  • Proper food, exercise and leisure are essential
  • Adequate sleep is a must

Organisation

  • Plan your study time; not only WHEN you will study, but WHAT and HOW you will study
  • Do not sit down to study and then try to decide what you will do – this is a sure way of wasting valuable time
  • Work out a study timetable, allotting time fairly so that each subject is well covered – this will overcome the tendency to spend too much time on any one subject at the expense of others
  • Break study time into blocks allowing for 5 – 10 minutes break after each hour
  • Use an efficient reading method, for example the SQ3Rs Method – Survey, Question, Read, Recall, and Review

With kind regards to all families,

News from Year 10

It has been a particularly busy time for Year 10 families with the recent scheduling of the Morrisby Vocational testing feedback session, the Elevate Education seminar and the IB Information evening all focusing on providing a diversity of opportunities for families to engage with our programs and assist those important home conversations.

Monash Scholars Program

At a recent Level Assembly the students were spoken to about the Monash Scholars Program. Daniella Cosentino of Year 11, who is a current Monash Scholar, highlighted the benefits of being a part of this special relationship with not only Monash University but with other high-achieving students. https://www.study.monash/why-choose-monash/information-for-high-achieving-students/monash-scholars

Year 10 Elevate Education Parent Seminar

The recent Year 10 Elevate Education Study Sensei session was followed up with a parent seminar to assist families support their child as they approach their first full set of examinations. The key messages from the Elevate Education seminar included an analysis of the habits of the top performing students in the state based on the company’s own empirical research.

Some useful key points include:

A Balanced Life

It is important for students to pursue their interests in sport, hobbies or music to provide a break from study and enhance fitness and well-being.

Assisting Memory

Use a combination of approaches including auditory, visual and kinaesthetic

Tip: Short and regular revision assists material being stored in long-term memory rather than one lengthy session the night before a test or examination!

Difference between Homework and Study

Homework is directed and set by the teacher; whereas, study includes regular independent work including note taking, extra reading (for exposure to examples and to enhance depth of responses) and practice questions that are marked/discussed by the teacher or checked against solutions.

Tip: Complete the study for even 15 – 20 minutes before the homework

Time Management

  • Aim to create a one week study/homework timetable that is completed at the start of the week using either electronic or printed options
  • Break large tasks into distinct parts to gain a sense of achievement and to avoid leaving assignments to the last minute
  • Enter such activities as sports training or a favourite TV show in first and then plan study time followed by homework.

Tip: Print out this timetable and keep it in a visible location

Note-Taking

  • Keep a separate revision folder with loose leaf paper rather than a notebook
  • Avoid re-writing notes, add colour and use techniques such as key words or concept diagrams to help with connections between the material
  • Add examples or evidence from wider reading progressively throughout a topic
  • Make study notes ideally each week to avoid last minute summarising and failure to complete practice questions. High performing Year 12 students are doing practice papers or additional reading during the September holidays whereas a large proportion of the state are doing their summary notes!

Managing Distractions

  • Management of social media could include effective group study chat sessions but also the use of Apps such as ‘Self Control’ or ‘Focus Me’
  • Turn off mobile phones and access to social media while studying
  • Try and work for 30 minutes (study) to 1 hour (homework) blocks
  • Eat a well-balanced diet and include regular exercise to assist concentration
  • Listening to music was a discussion item and while, in some instances, music can be a motivator to work there are other times where high levels of concentration are required and there is a belief that students should be training in the conditions that they must perform in – ie the examination room is a silent space.

Motivation

  • Importance of intrinsic motivation from within and the value of setting future goals
  • Getting motivated and avoiding procrastination are linked and related to goal setting including some reward plan
  • Students should seek assistance and use their support network including family, friends and teachers
  • Do the difficult or least favourite work first for homework

There is public access to a wide range of materials on the Elevate Education website at http://au.elevateeducation.com/ and Year 10 families can access the student section by entering the password ‘rondo’.

Message 7: Focus on the here and now, for each day and in each lesson by taking small steps to improve rather than worrying about a final result at the end of the year. A check list may include changing a seating position in class to assist concentration, asking a question to clarify understanding, repeating a test question that was initially answered incorrectly and submitting it to the teacher or using your school diary to help plan the stages to complete an assignment.

Finally, Elevate Education has provided families with a password to access additional materials on their website. Please select http://au.elevateeducation.com/ and enter the password rondo.

News from Year 11

As we near the end of Semester 1, all Year 11 students are encouraged to stay on top of all their coursework as we are also getting closer to semester examinations, which are scheduled for the week of Monday 5 – Friday 9 June. Revision is essential, as is seeking out their class teachers for any clarification and suggestions for further study.

Parents are also advised that permission forms for the Year 11 Formal, which is scheduled for the last Friday of Term 2, Friday 23 June, have been mailed out and replies are due back to the school by this Friday 19 May in order to secure the venue. News from Year 12

It was wonderful to see so many of our Year 12 families make the commitment to support one of our most important annual family events – our very special Cathedral Service at St Paul’s Cathedral, on Sunday 7 May; particularly as this year, when we are celebrating 140 years of outstanding education through Tintern. Many people have remarked that the music was especially uplifting this year. My thanks go to all the Year 12 students, in particular our School Leaders, who contributed their commitment and talents to this important community event.

Academically, Year 12 students are now in the throes of preparing for the GAT (the General Achievement Test) which all Year 12 students (IB and VCE) and all Year 11 students who do a VCE Unit 3/4 subject must sit on Wednesday 14 June, from 9.15am to 1.30pm. Please make a note of this date and avoid all appointments on this day, as the GAT is a compulsory assessment taken by these nominated students. To give our students the best preparation we have hired a GAT examiner who will give brief feedback on the practice Writing papers that they will have the opportunity to complete in upcoming Utility periods.

Staff versus Student Basketball Match

On Thursday 11 May the All-Star Staff team from the Middle School took on the Year 8 boys in a game of basketball. The Year 8s were broken up into two teams, with each team playing 12 minute halves against the staff. It was a fantastic event with a lot of enthusiasm demonstrated from both the staff and students.

There are some very talented Year 8 boys when it comes to basketball, and they very quickly recognised that they had the staff covered for speed and for skill. The only saving grace for the staff was that we played half-court (so we didn’t have to run as far) and that we had a couple of staff who are a bit taller than the boys.

In the end the All-Star Staff team won 14 – 13! The best part about this was seeing the fun and friendly banter between staff and students and the devastated look on the  boys faces when they realised that we had won! As you can imagine, we have now been challenged for a re-match with the Year 8s, as well as challenged by every other year level, both boys and girls to a similar match. But judging by the way most of us pulled up the next day, Game 2 may be some time off!

Music of Japan – World Music Incursion

On Friday the 28th of April, all of the Year 7 and 8 students went to the CM Wood Performance Centre to watch a Japanese taiko drumming performance. We also learned about some other instruments like the Japanese flute and some small handheld cymbals. It was a very interactive show, and lots of people got to go up on stage and try out the drums. Everyone else who weren’t lucky enough to be chosen clapped along to the rhythm.

My favourite part was when they pretended the cymbals were tennis racquets and had an invisible rally across the stage. It was a great performance and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Year 6 in Government

The boys in Year 6 are studying Government this term. So far, we have looked at democracy, the three levels of government and our electoral voting system. The boys formed political parties within the grade based on their special interests. Each party selected a leader and together organised speeches, posters, business cards and flyers to promote their ideas to the Tintern Junior Boys School electorate.

The leaders are: Rafi Taylor, Lachie Moir, Jakob Mazonowicz and Ryan Dalzotto

Each leader presented a speech at our Junior School Assembly on the Monday 8 May to persuade the TBJS electorate; that is all the Year 3 to 6’s, to vote for their ideas and elect their party as our government. We then held a secret ballot in the Southwood Centre, where all the boys from Year 3 to 6 classes cast their votes. After voting was completed, we collected the ballot boxes, and with the help of our electoral officers Yash Agrawal and Euan Forbes, we began the vote in the Southwood Centre ICT Room. Using the Preferential Voting system adopted by Australia, our guest vote counter, Mr Kenny, and the electoral scrutineers, we conducted the all-important vote count.

Our political parties are:

The Social Party: Jakob Mazonowicz, Max Lalor, Daniel Hynson, Euan Forbes and Lachlan Smith

The Sporty Six Party: Lachie Moir, Alistair Howley, Felix Chen, Jack Shi, Nick Reilly and Bailey Hanna

The Tintern Active Party: Rafi Taylor, Kanhai Patel, Bowie Kobayashi, Yash Agrawal, Xander Guscott and Alex Wong

The MTB Party (Make Tintern Better): Ryan Dalzotto and Oli Wolstencroft

The Independent Party: Charlie Brumley, Gus Keogh and Ronan Sebek

Congratulations to The Sporty Six Party who were elected into government and their leader, Lachie Moir, who is the Prime Minister for TBJS for 2017.

We will now begin to hold Class Parliament sessions where we debate the promises made during the campaign and see how many bills can be passed. Of course they must also be passed by The Senate (Mrs Neilson the Year 6 teacher) and signed off by our Governor General (Mr Kenny).

Such an exciting time is being had by all in Year 6 at the moment, plus we have our trip to Canberra coming up in Week 9.

Life just doesn’t get any better than this.

Seeking family Homestays for our International students

A homestay is a private home accepting overseas students to live as a part of the family.  At Tintern Grammar we are fortunate to have our wonderful international students and are always seeking welcoming family homes.  Being a homestay host provides great insights into other cultures and is a rewarding cultural exchange experience for the whole family.  Life-long friendships are often established through opening your home and heart to an international student.

Students’ families choose to pay for homestay accommodation during their study because it offers their child the opportunity to be part of a good family environment, to improve upon English and to be kept safe and cared for. Payment varies slightly but it is usually around $300 per week.

At Tintern Grammar we use an outside agency to coordinate our Homestay program but we would love to have Tintern families host a student to make them feel even more part of our community. For Tintern students who are studying Chinese as a Language there would be an added benefit of consolidating their learning by practising conversations with an International Student.

If you are interested in becoming a Homestay host please contact by email our Director of Marketing and Admissions mcape@tintern.vic.edu.au she will in turn put you in contact with our Homestay agency.

We look forward to hearing from you!
