A Valedictory farewell – Year 12 and a new door opening

Tuesday 22 November was the Tintern Grammar Valedictory Dinner, the final formal occasion for our Year 12 leavers. Watching our Valedictorians, was to see them at their best; there was a sense of lightened spirit and great enthusiasm for the future. Listening to some Year 12 parents, it is clear that this has been seen at home as well. It is easy to forget the build up to Year 12 may take place over 2, 3 or more years and with it can develop a set of challenges, pressures and stresses, that build incrementally to November of Year 12.

The changes in behaviour that can develop are much more noticeable by their absence after it is over, than during the year, some parents observed. It is the same at school; we tend to become aware of a more obviously open, positive and relaxed young man or woman, after it is over, than we are during the year.

Our class of 2016 were happy to talk about their futures on Tuesday and it was terrific to hear of plans for the summer, for 2017 and for the years beyond. Many spoke with fondness of teachers, even some in the early years of Junior School, and all of them reflected on their time at Tintern or Southwood with some nostalgia, despite me pointing out it might be a little early for that!

When I walked out of the dinner leaving the students to their dancing and other celebrations, I reflected that not only had they been a wonderful cohort, treating each other well, supporting each other and sharing their aspiration, but that they leave us well prepared for their futures; confidently forging ahead into an uncertain world with mindfulness, kindness and courage.

Factis non verbis.

Quartet performs original work

On 13 November, the Middle School String Quartet made up of Lydia Tan, Joshua Choong, Molly Fleming and myself, performed in a Composition Concert held by Molly’s composition teacher at the Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) in Kew. There were 30 performances of original compositions during the concert, including our performance of Molly’s composition titled ‘Wings of Thought’.

Most of the compositions were for solo piano, performed by the student composer. There were 3 other works, one for clarinet and piano, one for saxophone and piano, and Molly’s composition for string quintet written for 2 violins, viola, cello and piano. I was captivated by some of the solo piano works that used complex rhythms with expressive, lyrical melodies. Some of the student composers were as young as 9 years old! The concert was an eye opener to the world of music composition that knows no bounds.

Our performance of Molly’s piece, ‘Wings of Thought’, supported ably by Mrs Clementson on the piano, received much positive and encouraging feedback from the audience. This is our third performance of this piece, the first being the Penelope Thwaites Original Composition entry performance and the second was during school assembly. Credit must be given to Molly, who has worked very hard and patiently and made many improvements to her work over many months, while rehearsing with our quartet. We are glad to be part of her successful winning of the Penelope Thwaites Original Composition Award and thankful for the wonderful opportunity to perform at this composition concert. I look forward to many more performances with our quartet in the future.

Girls Intermediate Choir entertains local community

choir-at-probus-211116

On Monday 21 November, the Girls Intermediate Choir performed 5 items for the Ringwood Probus Club at their regular meeting place, The Ringwood Church of Christ on Bedford Road. The enthusiastic audience was very happy and eager to listen to us perform ‘Oye’, ‘Night Wind’, ‘Who would send a baby’, ‘Night of Silence’ and ‘Sing Alleluia’ and we were rewarded with a chipper applause (and chocolates) afterwards. During our short time there, Clarisse and Molly both performed an amazing solo piece each. Clarisse played the Brahms Hungarian Dance no 1 on violin and Molly performed ‘When Sonny Gets Blue’ by Marvin Fisher on piano. We were quickly invited back to perform there again, and it is certainly something we would like to do in the future!

Munching and Music hit the right note!

On the morning of 20 November the CM Wood Centre was filled to capacity with students, staff and families happily munching on tasty brunch offerings as they listened to a wonderful array of musical delights on stage. The mood was very festive and all who were present agreed it was a most convivial way to spend a Sunday morning. Congratulations to all of our young musicians on your fine performances and thank you to the Music Staff who brought the program to fruition.

Many, many thanks to the hard working parents on our Friends of Music Committee who, once again, ran a well-organised and successful fundraising event for our Music Department. On show at the event was the latest acquisition of the FOM committee – some attractive staging modules which have replaced some much older, worn out pieces. The staging is safe and secure for our students to use and versatile enough to be used at both indoor and outdoor events. The support of the committee throughout 2016 has been greatly appreciated.

Have you considered being a Parent representatives for 2017?

What are they? What do they do?

Now is the time to consider a role as a Year level parent representative for next year.

Year level parent reps are a vital link between the school and parents at each Year level. Each level or class should have at least one representative who will make themselves known to other parents across the year. The primary responsibility of the parent reps is to co-ordinate parent social activities throughout the year. The Year level parent rep should make every effort to meet all the parents at their Year level and should a new family arrive during the year, the Parent Rep is asked to make contact with the family, invite them to have coffee and meet other members of the year level. The parent and friend groups or the Community Relations Office may call upon the parent Reps to assist with sourcing volunteers for events or activities. We also encourage our parent reps to be available to answer any questions from our new incoming 2017 families. If this sounds like you please call or email Di Lacey in the Community Relations Office. Click here to view a description of the role.

A huge thank you is extended to all our 2016 Parent reps and if you would like to continue in the role please contact Di Lacey in the Community relations office on 9845 7877 or email communityrelations@tintern.vic.edu.au.

Second Hand book sale @ Lilydale Books

second-hand-books

The Tintern Parent Group have conducted a review of the volunteer-run second hand book sale and concluded, due to the difficulties in running such a big operation with volunteers and the service advantages that an external provider can offer, it would be best to move to an external provider rather than continue to run it from the school. If you would like to sell any of your child’s text books or buy any second hand for next year we have sourced a reliable trader, Lilydale Books, who will be able to provide more buy and sell opportunities than we could at school. (CAS Calculators included) All information can be viewed at this link on their website:http://www.lilydalebooks.com.au/Second-Hand-Books or on the school portal under parents services by clicking here. Special relationship through Music

We know that music helps us to break down the barriers…here is an example of two special friends about 80 years apart enjoying time together.  Charlotte in Year 1 has a very special family friend who takes her for a singing session after school. Her mentor is well into her 80s.. Mrs Ruth Hawkins who has had a connection with Tintern many years ago. How special to see Charlotte and Ruth share music together even though they are generations apart.

More recently Mrs Ruth Hawkins of Ringwood received the Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the community of Maroondah, which recognises her long association with the organisation of the annual Ringwood Eisteddfod and her life’s work as a musician and citizen of working for charity.  Her life has been all about music and giving opportunities to others.

Year 1-6 Orientation

Last week we all had a wonderful time welcoming the new girls of 2017 for two days of fun activities. The new students were accompanied by a buddy (a current student) and spent time getting to know the Junior School, meeting all the girls in their new class, visiting the farm and the pool, as well as seeing the Year 3 and 4 Production.  They were a fabulous lot of girls who really enjoyed their time discovering all about Tintern and meeting their friendly buddies.

Particular thanks go to Ms Kirkland, who organised the whole day, and Mr Viney for his help at the pool. 2017 is shaping up to be an exciting year with many new girls joining us.  I am sure they will settle in very well to our caring and welcoming community.

Year 3 / 4 Production success!

year-3-4-concert

Last week the ELC-Year 6 students, as well as families, were entertained expertly by the Year 3 and 4 students when they performed their ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’ Production. The show was truly outstanding.  It was exciting to witness each student and see how confidently they performed. Many thanks to Mrs Wagner, Mrs Hudgell and Mrs Gluskie who worked so well with the girls.

It is important to recognise that all the girls are taking more risks in their learning, they are working more out of their comfort zone to try new and harder activities, they are willing to try new things when they do not know what the exact outcome will be…  These are all good signs for them in the future as they build up the necessary resilience and confidence to be strong and empowered young women in the 21st Century.

Farm Visits

A merry group of 14 – 16 girls from Years 3 – 6, have regularly congregated in the courtyard for a brisk stroll down to the farm on Thursday lunchtimes. This Semester the girls were fortunate enough to see many lambs join the flock. They have followed their progress from fragile new borns to very robust lambs, gambolling around in the grassy paddocks. The girls have enjoyed being in the paddocks and have shown keen patience as they have persevered and managed to pat the sheep and lambs. Ollie the Marama guardian dog is always popular with the girls, as are the hens and the eggs they lay.

News from Year 12

On the evening of Tuesday 22 November the annual Valedictory Dinner marked the official conclusion of the Year 12 year. The final formal examinations had taken place earlier in the day, so by the evening all students were ready to “let their hair down” and celebrate. The evening took place at the beautiful Leonda by the Yarra and students, parents, families and staff members immensely enjoyed the delicious food, great company and, of course, some dancing. As their time as Tintern Grammar students has now come to an end the students were acknowledged and received gifts form Tintern Old Girls Association (TOGA), Southwood Boys Association (SOBA) and the new Tintern Grammar Alumni Association. We sincerely hope the students make the most of these important links to their School so that they can stay connected to the school and community they have been an integral part of over the years. They can also reap the benefits of being connected to other Tintern Alumni when it comes to personal and career development. So, for the final time, we wish the 2016 Valedictorians the very best of luck and look forward to some updates in the not too distant future.

News from Boys’ Middle School

Raising a boy is really hard! I know this is probably stating the obvious for most of you, but it really is. Just last week we had the last of our three orientation days for next year’s Year 7 boys as well as meeting with the parents of these boys at our information evening. The excitement among the boys as they get closer to moving from Junior Schools into the Middle School was palpable, as well as the touch of nervousness. This too was the feeling among the parents, who for many, are doing this for the very first time; they too, are taking another one of those steps alongside their son on his journey to manhood. The issue for a number of parents here is that the steps taken by their boy starts to get a bit bigger than mum and dads. The metaphorical hand holding that has occurred over the last 6 or 7 years through Junior School has potentially been shaken as they begin to discover their new, and many, pathways in life.

The Middle Years is hard for boys, but can sometimes be even harder for parents. The change that they see in their boy can often be immense and one that is difficult to understand and sometime accept. Michael Grose is an Australian parenting educator (www.parentingideas.com.au) and has written many books on raising children and he has shortlisted 5 key understandings the he believes will help you to raise well-adjusted boys:

  1. You must like them: Understand they’ll be boisterous, messy, disorganised, in your face – accept this. Approval is what boys need; from parents, peers and teachers. If they have this they will respond to you.
  2. They are hierarchical: They must have limits and boundaries and they need someone to enforce them.
  3. They are just as sensitive as girls: You just need different language to get them to open up than you do with girls. Ask him how he thinks about something and he may then open up about how he feels.
  4. Loyalty is massive: Being loyal to his family, his peers, etc. is huge. They will be incredibly influenced by their peers.
  5. They need a purpose: Motivation for school, life, etc. comes from having a purpose.

Parenting is not easy, I’m certainly discovering this with my little ones, but I can see that adolescence is a whole new ball game! Advice I can offer is to read what experts have to say, ask for advice from lots of people, and then discover what works best for your boy and your family. There is no one size fits all.

Year 8 Performing Arts Night

On Wednesday 23rd of November our 8D boys joined the 8A girls for our Semester 2 Year 8 Performing Arts Night. It was a combination of their work in both Music and Drama throughout Semester 2 and it was an amazing night. The most impressive thing from me about nights like this is that the boys are on stage doing something that is potentially out of their comfort zone (although for some it is right up their alley!) and being able to rise to the challenge. It was amazing to see boys perform solos vocally and on instruments, as well as be challenged by Vince DiMitro (their Drama teacher) with on-the-spot drama skits. The finale of a dance with the girls from 8D was amazing and hopefully a night the boys will remember fondly.

Year 9 Shrine of Remembrance Excursion

The Shrine of Remembrance commemorates all those killed in war in the hopes that the world will be at peace. Year 9 students studied World War One in History this year, so 9E and 9B travelled to the Shrine as part of our study on primary sources.

The students were moved by the diaries written by soldiers, as well as the artefacts including uniforms and medals the Shrine has on display. It was particularly special to those who had ancestors serve in combat throughout history and everyone was given the chance to hang a poppy in the garden.

It was an occasion of solemnity and the Shrine’s curators were impressed by the maturity and respect our students showed. We were given guided tours of the various exhibits, with careful attention paid to how various historical artefacts can be used as clues for uncovering past events.

Everyone was unsurprisingly subdued as we left the Shrine, due to the humbling effect of seeing so many touching stories of people from around the world.

It was a humbling experience.

Year 7 Orientation Day # 3

Our final Orientation Day for 2016 was arguably the most enjoyable. The students met in their classes with their 2017 Pastoral Mentors. Here they learned about the ‘nitty-gritty’ of secondary school life, including use of Record Books, the Portal, reading timetables and how the days and weeks are structured. They also participated in get-to-know-you activities with their form members.

The music program at Tintern is extensive. This was observed first-hand after recess, where performances from all sections of the orchestra were enjoyed. Information about learning an instrument in 2017 was also presented. This was followed by a tour of the school, and some very humorous “What if…?” scenarios, led by Year 8 students. The afternoon was a series of activities completed in House groups, led by the 2017 House Leaders. Overall an informative and action packed day!

Year 3 / 4 Camp Manyung 16-18 November

The boys in Years 3 and 4 have just spent three wonderful days at Camp Manyung, Mt Eliza. The weather was perfect and so were the boys! It was a most enjoyable time as the boys happily joined with their peers in a fun and encouraging environment away from home. Various activities and challenges focusing on group dynamics, problem solving, resilience, communication, trust and teamwork were made available to the boys and they all graciously accepted those challenges.

Over the 3 days the boys:

  • had fun on the beach
  • went for a swim
  • rode the GIANT swing
  • tried their hand at archery
  • attempted to solve the Initiatives course
  • ventured out to play night hide and seek (only the teachers were allowed to hide!)
  • learnt a new game called ‘Ga-Ga’
  • zoomed along the flying fox

The food was delicious and thankfully there was plenty of it as the boys were ravenous at each meal. The boys were most helpful when it was time to set the tables and they even vacuumed the dining room afterwards – for some this was also a new experience! We have come home with many fond memories and a great feeling of fulfilment.

House Swimming Carnival Wednesday 23 November

After 6 long years of yearning, training and keeping their eyes on the prize, Grant House finally won the 2016 House Swimming Carnival. It didn’t come easy as many great swimmers from each House challenged them to the very end. Butterss individual events gave Grant a big challenge as they won time and time again. However, with team events such as the boat race, cork scramble, boogie board race and others, were all worth double points. This is where Grant brought their team spirit into action and together won many of these events ultimately bringing them victory.

Congratulation to Grant House participants but really a big congratulations to all the boys where they gave their very best. Even some boys volunteered to replace those who were sick or not in attendance in races that were clearly challenging. This shows that so many boys brought team spirit on the day.

Now we wait with anticipation to see which House will achieve winning the House Shield this year.

News from Girls’ Middle School

While it may have become somewhat cliché to say that a year has passed in the ‘blink of an eye’, I’m sure many of you feel this sentiment too.  It has been a fantastic year in the Girls’ Middle School and I personally have enjoyed watching each of the students grow into increasingly strong, independent young women.

Last night I had the privilege of attending the Year 8 Performing Arts Evening.  It was 8A’s time to shine and shine they did.  With a variety of small ensemble and solo performances, it was abundantly clear that each and every student had put an enormous amount of time and effort to ensure the evening was a great success.

Today, we see some of our Year 9 girls competing in the EISM Ultimate Frisbee Grand Final.  I know that the girls have come together throughout the Term to form a cohesive team and I wish them and their coach, Mr Klan, the best of luck for the big game.

Our Year 7 students are close to completing their first year as part of the Tintern Middle School.  While the beginning of Year 7 can be quite a daunting task, it is fantastic to see the girls now moving around the Middle School buildings with such confidence.  Currently, they are busy preparing to make their ‘Christmas Hampers’ for local families who would not otherwise have the means of such a luxury.  This is sure to be an engaging and rewarding task.

As this newsletter reaches you, I will be at Melbourne Airport with an exceptionally excited group of Senior School students that are travelling to India as part of the World Challenge Program.  Just as I am prepared for this adventure, I know the Year 9’s are well and truly prepared for their upcoming Summer Expeditions!  They have participated in many ‘training’ workshops to develop their knowledge of the equipment required and appropriate meal plans.  I’m sure they will have an amazing time, whether they are rock climbing in Tasmania, sea kayaking on the Gippsland Lakes or braving the white water rapids of the Mitchell River.

Thank you for all the time and energy you have put into making 2016 a success.

I wish you all the best over the summer holidays and look forward to another exciting year in the Girls’ Middle School in 2017.
