From the Principal

A terrific return for the whole School community

Now nearly four weeks into term as I write this, I would be hard-pressed to think of a smoother start to the school year in any school where I have worked, in any year. Commencing Day 1, there was a palpable sense of quiet purpose amongst the students. Our Year 11 and 12 students were immediately using their study periods very sensibly and effectively and there was impressive engagement in the many classrooms I have nosed my way into! Our various Information Evenings for each section of the School have had larger than usual attendances this year and we have already had two terrific Tintern Grammar Alumni Association functions – a very active start indeed! I have enjoyed seeing many of you already at our “Drinks with the Principal” functions for each section of the School and am further looking forward to the coming ones. I do hope to chat with you at one or other of these, as for me they are invaluable opportunities to hear what you have to ask and to say.

On the topic of saying what we believe and the doing it (factis non verbis), the week before last saw our first staff Professional Learning Forum hosted by senior Tintern students! This was a ‘first ever’ leadership opportunity that was taken on and conducted in brilliant fashion by the students.

The first presenters (to all secondary staff) were Year 11 students Jack Read and Stefan Bennett, joined by Vishnu Pillay and Aidyn Malojer from Year 10. The boys presented their views on effective strategies for relating to and teaching boys in Senior College, and how boys think about and engage with their learning. Following this, Tara McAsey and Alex Eadie (Year 11), joined by Kate Swain and Nora Scanlan (Year 10) gave a girls’ perspective on the same topics to the secondary staff. Each group followed their presentation by answering questions without notice from the staff. The students were impressively thoughtful, considered and mature in their approach to this somewhat intimidating task and answered the staff questions with aplomb and significant good sense.

These were very valuable insights for the staff (this was their view, not mine!), and all the students clearly indicated it was an empowering process for them too. Perhaps most significant for me was the relationship building that I saw as I observed the activity – it was both obvious and impressive. As a collaborative process between students and staff, it was a very powerful one indeed!

In our school, experiences like this add richness and depth to the relationships between staff and students. The importance of collaboration across genders, ages and cultures in our students’ futures is clear and building skills and experience in these will engender students with a belief that they really can go out and influence their future world in partnership with others. This breadth of experience and opportunity partners with quality teaching to give our students every opportunity to achieve their best in and out of the classroom.

Tintern Grammar Foundation Service

What a great joy and delight it was to be part of the Tintern Grammar Foundation Service in our 140th year on Friday 10th February. To remember where we have come from and how we got here is so important as a collective memory and understanding of ourselves and our place here in the Tintern Grammar school community.

The whole school came together in the CM Wood Performance Centre, with parents and specials guests to look back, remember and to celebrate our school. To be able to look back on photos of the past, from the many years at Hawthorn, the move to Ringwood East, through all the different years of growth which began in 1877, with Mrs Emma B Cook and her vision for education.

It was an honour to have in attendance Alumni, Life Governors and members of the Board, as well as parents, staff and most importantly students. Life Governor, Deirdre Johnston (YG 1955) was able to tell the school about the Hawthorn years and Southwood old boy Dean Vescio (YG 2012) led us through a prayer of thanksgiving for the past.

Our principal, Mr Bradley Fry then reminded each of us the importance of this day and that it is the journey we travel which is important.

It truly was a service of celebration, with beautiful music from the Concert choir, the cutting of a 140th birthday cake and then chocolate cake for all students throughout the school at recess.

A wonderful way to begin our 140th year together!

Alexander Technique Workshop for Tintern’s orchestral members

On a warm Wednesday afternoon, the Symphony Orchestra along with other invited students participated in an Alexander Technique Workshop run by Michael Loftus-Hills. In the workshop, Michael showed us how to stay energized and alert during rehearsals for bands and orchestras after school, when most students are usually exhausted from their day at school and inter school sports. He also showed us how to develop a good posture when playing our instruments in order for us to play to the best of our ability. Michael showed us various exercises where we learnt about the joints and muscles in our body, such as leaning our heads forward and back, and became more conscious of our balance. Finding the perfect balance where your body is comfortable but also alert for playing is very important in music and will be very handy for our long 90-minute rehearsals after school. Michael also advised us that if we love the music we are playing, the tone and sound quality of our music will be greatly improved, as we could hear the difference after he brought this to our attention. Overall, the workshop was very beneficial for all the students who attended as they can now apply what they learned to their music in order to get the best out of their playing. Thank you to Mr Veldman for organising this workshop for us all.

Beginning the year!

The beginning of the school year can be a nerve racking time, particularly when you are 3 or 4 years old and the height of most people’s knees!  This time can be filled with both excitement and apprehension. The first day is often great, the second good and by the third day the children are beginning to question, “Is this it now? Are you going to leave me here again today?!”

Fortunately, our children love coming to the ELC! A big part of this is the relationships they build with staff.  Helping the children feel happy and secure is our most important role. Staff spend their time engaging with children 1:1 and in small groups to get to know their thoughts, ideas and interests, and this forms the basis for our teaching and learning program through the year.

Letterland Talk to ELC-Year 2 Parents

We had a lovely turnout of enthusiastic parents at our Letterland Talk this week.  Helen Kirkland explained in greater detail how the  Letterland programs supports literacy development and taught us more about phonological awareness and its importance in building firm foundations for further literacy development. Research indicates that strong phonological awareness is a strong predictor in gauging future reading success.  Phonological awareness is the ability to manipulate sounds in words through use of syllables, rhyme, alliteration and deleting a single sound in a word.

We had time for several questions and as always we are appreciative of the wonderful support from our families for information sessions such as these. We are always very grateful to Helen Kirkland for sharing her extensive expertise in this area which supports the school and the students so well.

How do I Speak up?

As the term progresses the girls are beginning to link in very well with the new 2017 theme ‘Speak up and Get Along’.

We have been discussing ways to help us learn to Speak up by using the Blue Jay Bird as our inspiration.  It is important that our girls learn strategies to know how to ‘speak up’ so they can grow and build into confident young women of the world.

Some of the tools needed to assist this process are as follows:

  • The Power I – a way to tell others what you think, what you want and how you feel (in a respectful way!)
  • No Thanks – learning to say no thanks is an important skill required to keep safe and out of trouble (in other words ‘doing the right thing’)
  • Asking Questions – when you need information or help

We are encouraging the girls to try these ideas at school, at home, in your neighbourhood or wherever you’re with other people. As parents you may like to discuss these ideas with your daughter so they can practise these techniques at home too.  These skills will help them to be even happier at school!

We’ve been learning strings in 3D. My teacher, Mr Veldman is always saying I’m natural at the violin. It’s pretty fun – Miles Tang

The strings are amazing! We learnt to pluck our instruments and now we can play “Bobby Shafto” with the bow. We can hold the instruments and bows the correct way, and we also know the different parts of the Cello and Violin – Lincoln Dauparas

I like to play the violin because you learn to hold the bow and violin properly – James Winduss

Year 3-6 Back To School Morning

We were delighted to welcome more than 50 guests Back To School yesterday for our annual B2S morning.

Our Assembly saw our boys and guests discuss items related to our Lion-Hearted theme, and then it was off to Literacy and Maths classes.

After a well-deserved and heartily welcomed morning tea, our guests and boys attended a range of specialist classes;  Music, PE, Rock and Water and Art.

The morning gives us an opportunity to share our school and programs with our families, while giving a ‘hands-on’ insight to what happens in class.

Our boys also love the opportunity to share their day with a special guest.

We are most appreciative of those who were able to join with us for the morning, and are looking forward to our Prep-Year 2 Back To School morning this Friday.

Lion – Hearted

What does it mean to be Lion-hearted? We have begun discussing this in our Assemblies as we continue to SAIL (Lionhearted) in our Boys’ Junior School.

During our Back To School Morning on Monday, I asked the boys to discuss their thoughts on this with their adult guest.

I then presented examples of behaviour to further discuss; teenage boys diving into an ocean beach blowhole where the sea was incredibly savage; Larry Walters (better known as Danny Deckchair, who in 1982, tied 32 helium weather balloons to an ordinary deckchair and to his surprise, floated up above airplane space; passengers standing up for a Muslim woman being abused on a train; people abseiling; trying surfing for the first time; taking substances; intervening when bullying occurs; the two teenagers who tried to stop the driver of the Bourke Street tragedy…

It can be difficult to define what is lion-hearted, and what is foolish. We did discuss that when there is a sense of unsafety, the possibility of bad consequences, and when behaviour doesn’t reflect one’s values… then ‘lion-heartedness’ can become foolhardiness.

Playing piano in assembly and at concerts, running a cross country race when it is very challenging to oneself, walking away from a situation that is wrong – these can be very ‘lion-hearted’ actions.

A definition I presented was as follows:

Constantly challenging one self. Taking every single opportunity without regrets. Learning, developing and seeing beauty in all kinds of moments in life no matter how big/small they may be. Knowing what you’re worth, treating yourself like you deserve to be treated. Simply, just being you and being brave. Like a lion you know, fight for what you stand for. A Lionheart would never give up on its dreams.

We will continue to discuss our ‘L’ of SAIL in the coming weeks

Girls’ Middle School News

Term 1 is now in full swing as we cross the half way mark it’s great to see the Year 7s settled in to secondary schooling life, new friendships developing and the positive involvement of our students in so many aspects of school life. In our assemblies this week we acknowledged our 2017 Middle School Leaders (pictured below), who, in the first few weeks of term have already made a big impression as they work together to organise and promote a variety of opportunities for the girls. Our Middle School Captains and Leaders engaged us all at our Middle School Assembly as they spoke to the theme of ‘Aspire’ and we enjoyed a wonderful performance on the Clarinet from Lilli Holliday-Ryder.

Our Year 8 and 9 girls have been busy preparing for their camps taking place 27 February – 3 March. The girls have much to look forward to as each camp presents them with opportunities to challenge themselves and develop their independence, resilience and skills in the outdoors. They will test themselves whether they’re completing a high ropes element on Year 8 camp or having to be self-sufficient on the Year 9 bushwalks, however, whatever challenge is presented to them they will be well supported by staff and their peers and I look forward to hearing stories to share with you all upon their return.

The skills have been impressive as we’ve seen the ball be hotly contested, opponents taken on and whopping goals from 40m on the siren. The competition continues for the remainder of Term 1 with the Grand Final taking place on Wednesday 22 March. The ladder sees Gordon/Grant sitting on top with Butterss/Cross, Dann/Watt and Somner/Stewart all within one win of the top spot.

Boys’ Middle School News

The last two weeks have seen our boys actively involved in many aspects of school. From normal classroom activities through to competitive sport, rehearsals for production, choirs, swimming training and much more. It’s great for them to be involved in many aspects of school in regard to engagement and connectedness, but with that can also come the challenges around organisation and finding a comfortable balance in life – especially through adolescence. For this reason, our Pastoral Mentors have been helping our boys work on their organisational skills and on creating consistency in their lives. The focus has been on understanding how to use the Portal successfully, how to fill out their Record Book and how to allocate time for homework after school. This may be a new concept to some of our Year 7s but is hopefully a reinforcement to our 8s and 9s on what has been introduced to them previously. Continually reminding our boys of this is necessary both at school and at home in order to create patterns of behaviour.

We love patterns (not just us Maths teachers); our brains love patterns. Neuroscience has shown that our brains evolve and adapt when we repeat processes by strengthening the neural pathways associated with performing particular tasks or actions, the more we repeat, the stronger the neural pathways become. This is why setting regular routines around homework and other activities outside of school is important for boys, which includes revising and revisiting topics and points of discussions from their classes that day.

The idea that our brains are malleable is not limited to just children. I recently read a great article on neuroplasticity and the fundamentals of rewiring our brains and it goes to prove that you actually can teach an old dog new tricks – it just may take a bit of commitment. Click on the link to read the article: http://reset.me/story/neuroplasticity-the-10-fundamentals-of-rewiring-your-brain/

I’d like to wish our Year 8s and 9s all the best as they head off on their Term 1 camps. Our Year 8s are based in Myrtleford for the week with activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, cycling and hiking to the top of Mount Buffalo, whilst our Year 9s are hiking the Great Ocean Walk for 5 days amongst some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia.

It was fantastic to see our boys and girls compete so well in our recent House Athletics carnival on Friday at the Bill Stewart Athletics Track. The level of athletic ability across our Middle School is excellent with many fine individual and team performances on the day. Congratulations to Somner/Stewart House who were the eventual winners on the day.

Geography at Year 7

The boys recently had to complete an activity that tested their ability to follow directions, bearings and distance instructions to find the ‘treasure’ on an island using an A4 size map. They then had to photo copy their completed map to an A3 size and build an appropriate landscape using playdough, computer generated designs and colour pencils. It was a great way to work with the boys in a hands-on learning experience whilst also allowing for some real creativity. I have been really impressed with the high level of ability and enthusiasm that these boys have shown so far this year.

Sporting Update by Paul Haasbroek (Middle School Sports Captain 2017)

Throughout the holidays we have had many students exceed in high levels of sporting achievements, they competed at high levels and trained with some of the best coaches in Victoria.

Year 7: With the Year 7s only just beginning this year it’s been a bit more challenging to learn of their accomplishments, but I’m sure more will appear as the year goes along.

  • Brinthan Mahadeva: Brinthan plays club cricket for Deepdene Bears and has recently been selected in the Inter State Victorian Team (ECA) as a bowling all-rounder. He took 5 for 7 in one of the matches against the Western Region (WCA). Like all young cricket lovers, he hopes to one day play cricket for Australia.

Year 8: Our Year 8 boys have achieved some excellent results across a variety of sports:

  • Mitchell Snowball: Mitch recently won the Victorian State Championships and the Australian National rounds for cycling. Mitch competes in lots of cycling events each weekend and has also won the school series two years in a row.
  • Mitchell McGovern: We have another Mitch who is also a great cyclist. He has exceeded above all expectations and competed in the Hill Climb Championships recently that is attached to the Jayco Sun Tour and managed to finish in first place. He currently leads the overall points race with two events to come.
  • Kaidin Dalzotto: Kaidin is an outstanding swimmer who has a very big competition coming up called the National Age Meet. His times are improving by the week and he is certainly a name to watch in the future.

From left to right: Mitchell Snowball, Mitchell McGovern and Kaidin Dalzotto.

Year 9: We have a number of Year 9 boys performing really well in sports at the moment:

  • Will Paul and Ben Apsey: These two boys have just made the school state swimming squad for EISM. They have been training really hard for the past few years and are performing really well.
  • Corey Dickson: Corey is an outstanding race walker, he has succeeded multiple times at national level. Corey is heading to Sydney to compete at the Australian Junior Championships and hoping for great results in his 3km race walk. Corey is another great athlete that we should look out for in the future.
  • Adam Pica: Adam is currently training with a hawthorn academy and training with the Vic Squad for AFL footy. Adam is a great footballer and has achieved league best and fairest multiple times, he is a younger student in Year 9 but still seems to thread in and between the older students while playing footy.
  • Ben Hammond: Ben is an outstanding cricket player and has made the Inner East cricket squad for under 14s, he has been asked to play for the under 15s Victorian cricket team, Ben is hoping to play cricket at high levels when he is older.
  • Alex Jenkin: Alex is a high-level basketball player, he plays for the Blackburn rep team and has won the Eltham Dandenong dual MVP award. Alex represents Tintern at EISM meets for basketball all the time.

Paul Haasbroek

An extra addition by Mr Trollope:

I need to include Paul Haasbroek in this article as he didn’t want to write about himself. Paul recently competed in 2017 State Multi-Event Championship held at La Trobe University Complex in Bendigo. This consists of six disciplines over two days; 100m, 800m, 90m Hurdles, discus, high jump and long jump. Paul won the long jump and hurdles, came 2nd in the high jump and 800m, 3rd in the 100m and 4th in the discus. With all of these placings Paul managed to win the event which is an amazing result. Whilst accomplishing this result, the total points he achieved for this event broke his local athletics club, Knox Athletics’, record for points. A great effort and certainly a name to watch out for in the future.

Team Building Year 9

On Tuesday 20 February our Year 9 boys and girls were involved in a session run by an external group called Supreme Incursion focusing on teamwork, collaboration and leadership. It was run in the school gym and involved our boys working in both small and large teams to accomplish certain achievements and goals. The boys needed to demonstrate good listening, leading, patience and teamwork in order to complete these tasks.

Homework Club and Maths Assist

Both homework club and Maths Assist are running again this year. The two offerings are there to provide our boys (and girls) with assistance in either Mathematics specifically or homework in general.

Maths Assist is a program organised through the Maths faculty running in the library on a Wednesday afternoon from 3:45pm to 4:45pm beginning Wednesday 1 March. It is run by our Year 11 and 12 students and Maths Captains, and involves tutoring for younger students on any topic they are currently studying or need assistance with. To access this they do need to book a spot, which is done in the library.

Homework club is run by our Learning Enhancement department and is conducted in the Education Support building on a Tuesday afternoons from 3:40pm to 5:00pm. This is an opportunity for students to work consistently on homework from any subject for approximately an hour under the guidance of a teacher.

Year 10 City Experience and the Years 11 and 12 Conferences

The Year 10 City Experience and the Year 11 and 12 Conferences were held from Monday 20 – Wednesday 22 February and, as you will read in the accompanying Year Level Co-ordinators’ Reports, all of these events were highly successful and enjoyable. I was delighted to join the Year 12s on Monday evening for their session with Dr Michael Carr-Gregg and again through the day on Tuesday, and then to join the Year 10s on Tuesday evening. It was especially pleasing to see first-hand how well organised the programs were and how well behaved our students are when out and about in public representing the School.

House Athletics Sports

On Friday 24 February our House Athletics Sports was held at the Bill Sewart reserve in East Burwood. I would like to commend our House Captains for their commitment to their House and the leadership they demonstrated both on the day and in lead-up Assemblies. It was, however, disappointing to see that a number of senior college students chose not to provide their House Captains with the support they needed in making the choice not to attend on the day.

Student Reflections and Goals

This week in Utility time Senior College students will be asked to reflect on their reports from Semester 2 last year and consider what goals they can define for year ahead: these may be in terms of achievements and/or actions.

These goals will be useful reference points for both the students and their pastoral mentors and will be revisited throughout the year.

Hairspray

Rehearsals for this year’s School Musical, ‘Hairspray’, are well and truly going “full steam ahead” and everyone in the community is looking forward to another outstanding production from our cast. A large number of Senior College students are involved as either cast or crew. Performances are scheduled for Wednesday 22 March (preview night) and then from 23 – 25 March. Tickets are already available through the following link.

Interim Reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews

Parents/Guardians will soon receive information about our Term 1 Interim Reports process. Pease be aware that Student-Parent-Teacher interviews are scheduled for Tuesday 21, Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 March.

From the Director of IB

On Thursday 15 February Mr Brad Fry, Mr Geoff Connor, Mr Jason McManus and I attended the International Baccalaureate Diploma Awards Ceremony at Deakin Edge, Federation Square, Melbourne.

This is an annual event which honours those IB students in Victoria and Tasmania who achieve IB scores of 40 and above. The fact that such a result is honoured by a ceremony indicates the magnitude of these students’ achievements. Tintern Grammar students Madison Button, Anjali Lobo and Keely McGovern were recipients of awards at this year’s ceremony.

The evening was well attended by past students, their families and staff members from all participating schools. Dr Marcia Behrenbruch, Development Manager, Australasia, International Baccalaureate Organisation, delivered a message of congratulations to the IB graduates. She stated that the IB seeks to help students to see that others with differences can also be right. The IB teaches about different perspectives and the importance of inclusivity. There is focus on the concept of agency – empowering people to make a difference. This occurs at three levels – students, teachers and schools; with the latter being the agency of a community, all of which aims to make a better, more peaceful world. This might sound like a high-minded ideal, but Dr Behrenbruch showed how the discussion of ideas and concepts, often with those who are not like-minded, requires open-mindedness, some risk taking and reflection, and can lead to respect for others’ views. Her comments gave pause for thought and they reinforced the great value of the Diploma Programme.

Tintern Grammar has been running the IB Diploma Programme for 25 years, with great success. It is an important part of our culture as well as a highly desirable academic pathway in Years 11 and 12. We regularly have our past IB students return to the school to speak at information nights and assemblies where they remark upon the many benefits of the programme which include excellent preparation for university study and life. An IB Information Evening will be held late in Term 2.

The printed report will be made available at the Feedback Session on Thursday 27 April from 7.30 to 8.45pm in the Tintern Theatre. A representative from Career Analysts will be conducting the evening session to assist the students and their families to understand the results.

The Morrisby Online system involves a series of computer based tests to help identify strengths combined with a questionnaire focusing on preferred work styles, environment and talents. The student receives unlimited access to the interactive website in addition to their report to explore their Career interests in terms of vocational opportunities.

Families and students in Years 10 to 12 will be emailed a flyer including a reply slip and places will be limited to ensure appropriate supervision levels from the Careers staff at Tintern. News from Year 10

Year 10 City Experience

Year 10 students participated in a successful City Experience from Monday 20 to Wednesday 22 February. The venue for this camp at CYC City in Collins Street provided a high standard of accommodation and easy access to the CBD region. The camp incorporated a wide range of activities that aimed to develop personal skills and complement the school’s academic program while enjoying the experience of being in the city. Students participated in a tour of the Watch House at the Old Melbourne Gaol and also an indigenous tour at the Royal Botanic Gardens. They also visited Parliament House and the staff from Urban Seed challenged stereotypes about homelessness in the inner city of Melbourne. Students were also able to select from a range of electives including tours of the MCG, the Melbourne Aquarium, Laser Tag and Bowling, the Hardrock Climbing Centre and the City Baths. Another highlight included the stage musical, ‘Kinky Boots’, at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

During this week, Rachelle Jones a Youth Worker from the Maroondah City Council addressed the Year 10 students about a new initiative that has replaced the longstanding Young Leaders’ Program. The Maroondah Council has demonstrated a commitment to raising the wellbeing of young people and empowering young people to create positive change in their communities. Our students may self nominate to become part of SWAT (Student Wellbeing Action Teams) and show an interest in leadership plus an ability to commit to tasks rather than necessarily possessing an existing leadership role. I do encourage families to discuss the program at home as students are required to send me an email briefly outlining their reasons for representing Tintern Grammar in this program by Monday 6 March.

In 2017, the SWAT project will have 3 compulsory components and one optional component:

    1. The SWAT Summit (Tuesday 28 March) This is a 1 day workshop for 25 students from across Maroondah held at Aquinas College, providing an introduction to leadership, wellbeing and the idea of becoming ‘champions’ of change. A staff member from Tintern will attend this event.
    2. The SWAT Retreat (Monday 8 May to Wednesday 10 May) This is a 2 night and 3 day camp staffed by 4 Maroondah City Council Youth Workers with the aim to provide an intensive skill/personal development opportunity for students.
    3. The SWAT Teams (Term 3 and 4) To ensure that the students’ newly acquired leadership and wellbeing knowledge are transferred into positive outcomes, a Youth Worker from Maroondah Youth Services will be allocated to each school to support the SWAT teams to increase wellbeing in their schools.
  • SWAT Representatives (Optional) There will also be limited opportunities available for students to become involved in the SWAT program in conjunction with the Maroondah City Council to engage with the broader Maroondah community.

News from Year 11

The Year 11 Conference has come and gone, and the entire pastoral staff who attended could not have been more impressed with the behaviour, attitude and maturity of the entire Year 11 cohort. It was a truly enjoyable three days with students partaking in a wide range of activities including guest speakers, a visit to the Penguin Parade, laser strike, a disco, surfing and an astronomy lecture. Unfortunately, the weather on Monday wasn’t ideal, but it improved throughout the Conference with Wednesday proving to be a beautiful day on the beach to take surfing lessons.

The students gave everything a go, and I was personally most impressed with the level of camaraderie and friendliness that all the students, with their varied backgrounds and interests, showed each other. It is indicative of this group of young people that they would compose themselves in such a manner, and “they did Tintern Grammar proud”.

News from Year 12

On the Monday 20 – Wednesday 22 February the Year 12 students took part in their annual Conference designed to help them navigate their way through their final year of formal schooling and to help prepare them for future employment and study. The Conference commenced on the Monday at Tintern with students taking part in ‘the bike factory’ which had them working on developing team work and communication skills by racing to build bikes that would later be donated to the ‘Pyjama Foundation’. The highlight of the day for most students, and for the many parents who attended, was the session run by the highly regarded Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. His engaging session aimed to give both students and their parents useful and practical tips for ‘surviving Year 12’.

On Tuesday morning, students made their own way into Victoria University, Flinders Street, where they were entertained and enlightened with Jason Clarke’s take on what happens in “Year 13”. Jason has successfully developed a business that aims to promote and develop innovation, creativity and problem solving skills. In the afternoon, all students got an opportunity to experience first-hand some successful social enterprises ‘Thank-you’ and ‘The Big Issue’.

Wednesday morning, once again at Victoria University, saw students take part in a very important session with James Lynch who is a well-known and respected recruitment expert. He gave the students some very practical tips on how to approach University and employment applications and interviews. Three brave students also volunteered to undertake a “mock” interview with James in front of their peers, which was most helpful to all Year 12 students.

The final speaker for the conference was Sonya Karras who spent 10 years working in the Hospitality Industry. She discussed drugs, alcohol, keeping safe and celebrating of every kind! Sonya shared her strategies to celebrate safely in a unique, no nonsense and humorous way, which left the Year 12 students informed, entertained and with memories that will stay with them for years to come.

Tintern Grammar was proudly represented by 2016 IB Visual Art graduates Jack Church, Maddy Button and Heidi Ruckert. Their exceptional artwork was selected from a range of Victorian and Tasmanian IB Diploma World Schools, and represented the highest achieving work in the state. It was an outstanding accomplishment that each student had not one, but two works selected to be included in this prestigious exhibition. Quite an achievement!

Opening night was a wonderful event, attended by Jack and Heidi and their families, as well as IB Co-ordinator Nola Brotchie, Visual Art Teacher Rachel Waud and Principal Brad Fry.
