From the Principal
Who really matters anyway?
Tintern has had a long and storied history of student-led social justice activities and commitment, but what does “social justice” really mean? I imagine there are a range of views about what this means, but in my view, it could be encapsulated in the following graphic:

Not everyone has the same ability to affect their own circumstances, and from my first day at Tintern I was struck by our young men’s and women’s ability to see this as it affected other young people, whether at Tintern, in Australia, or internationally.
At our Spring Celebration this year, our Young Farmers group decided that all funds raised from sales of cakes, etc. to the 300 or so attendees, would be donated to the “Buy a Bale” cause to help farmers in NSW and QLD who have been so terribly affected by the drought. While many of this group are city children, their ability to see the world through the eyes of others is amazing, as was their commitment to this cause. On the day, our Tintern community supported their passion and energy from their pockets and so they truly made a difference. For me, this was yet another example of our students’ ability to recognise that so many people are less fortunate than themselves.
Our Tintern Social Justice group has provided support for the Sunflower Foundation for many years, supporting education for young women in developing counties – an admirable cause and one they were impressively committed to. This year, however, the Social Justice group decided to re-focus their support and direct it towards education of remote indigenous students. As a result, and initially for 2018, Anglicare have provided us with the support network to do this, and we are very grateful to them. At the “Comedy for a Cause” evening earlier this year, the $4000+ raised has been committed to schools and school programs in Anglican indigenous communities in northern Australia.
This is also a very admirable project, with progress already made being easy to admire (and I certainly do) but our Social Justice group see this as only an intermediate stage, and want to establish a permanent relationship with an Anglican indigenous community in Central or Northern Australia. We are currently seeking a partner for this (and the group are putting plenty of pressure on me through their convenor, Ms Jeanette Kropp!) and we hope to have this relationship established ahead of our next major Social Justice group event. Beyond that, plans are afoot for it to lead to a visiting program that will enable our young women and men to experience a life very different to their own and to provide personal and tangible service to a community that would truly understand the impact of that service.
Both of these initiatives truly exemplify our motto – factis non verbis!

Curriculum Matters
We are nearing the end of another busy term at Tintern and our senior students are gearing up for the pre-examination revision stage of their studies for 2018. Many thanks to our staff who work tirelessly with all of our students and who have, more recently, participated in our all-important Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences. These conversations provide an unsurpassed opportunity for teachers to celebrate success and growth with students and their families and, also, to discuss areas for improvement and future focus. These frank exchanges can be the springboard for even further positive choices by students and continued development in the classroom.
Over the past few weeks, we have been receiving the results of ICAS testing administered by the University of NSW. This program, like NAPLAN, provides a snapshot in time of students’ progress in particular disciplines and is a piece of data which, when added to the bigger picture, may help to inform our staff of the learning needs and future foci for our students. Recently, we have received our NAPLAN results for our current Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 cohorts. We have seen some pleasing trends and more detailed analysis of our results will be forthcoming early in Term 4 but, in the meantime, you might have read with interest some of the press around the introduction of online NAPLAN testing. All Australian schools are moving to NAPLAN Online by 2020. In 2018, around 20 percent of Australian students undertook NAPLAN online and a larger percentage will do so in 2019. Tintern will be one of the schools moving to online testing next year and we recently have had a ‘taster’ of the new testing system when the school undertook readiness testing of the technology necessary to administer the tests online to such a large cohort of students in one sitting.
The publication of results this year took the format of combined data for the online and paper student cohorts. The decision to place all of these results into one comparative summary was a somewhat contentious one. I would remind all families that your child’s NAPLAN results are a snapshot of your child’s progress at a given point in time and all individual NAPLAN test results should be considered alongside broader school-based assessments, which provide a more detailed picture of the whole child and their progress across many streams. Interestingly, the feedback from schools this year was that students found the online assessment ‘engaging’ and, indeed, our small handful of students who assisted with the technology readiness testing earlier this term gave similar feedback. We will keep families informed next year of the progress towards the online testing system.
I would like to thank our staff for continuing to provide excellent learning opportunities to our students throughout this term and the students themselves for embracing all that they do with confidence, enthusiasm and curiosity. Our journey to strive to be the best we can be also relies on support from you, the parents and families of our students. You play such an important role in ensuring that your children receive a consistent message about the benefits of making the most of the opportunities they encounter at Tintern on a daily basis. Together, we can continue to ensure that our young charges, your children, always are putting their best foot forward and truly enjoying their learning journey.
I wish you all a happy and safe holiday break.

IB Recital provides a wonderful array of musical delights
The IB music class of 2018 held their recital last Thursday 12 September. We performed our solo programs, of around twenty minutes each, as well as showcasing our original compositions. This culmination of two years’ worth of tireless work was our chance to display how much we have flourished during the music course, having developed as solo instrumentalists and produced unique works testing new compositional skills. Steven Zhang performed on piano as well as timpani, xylophone, and drum kit, displaying his widespread talent for percussion. Charlotte Menagh performed on clarinet her solo program as well as one of her outstanding compositions written for clarinet trio entitled “Three Sisters”, which evoked the emotions experienced during a fight with her twin siblings. I performed on solo flute, and most enjoyed the performance of ‘Mei’, a modern Japanese work which is atonal, has both haunting long notes and striking accents, and involves diverse techniques such as flutter-tonguing, glissandi and key clicks. The Year 11 IB music students, Molly Fleming and Ron Chen, both played beautiful pieces on solo piano, giving us a taste of the amazing talents yet to be featured at next year’s IB recital. The music class thanks all staff and students who accompanied us, performed in our compositions, and helped organise and run what was an incredible night and an opportunity, which I feel privileged to have had.

Parents welcome to attend FOE Meeting tonight (Tuesday 18 September) to learn more about this merry group
Dear fellow horsey parents
Friends of Equestrian (FOE) are starting to move into the planning phase of the year for the Tintern 19th Interschool Horse Trial Championships. We have two wonderful parents (families) who will be finishing up with us and we would love to publicly thank them for all their hard work. Sarah and Phil Thompson (Brooke, Year 12) and Elizabeth Sinclair and Michael Cox (Jimmy, Year 12). Sarah has worked on the committee for the last 4 years and, in more recent years, she looked after the Judges’ catering and fed us all over the weekend brilliantly. Phil has been on the committee as our Risk/Safety Coordinator and has worked in this capacity at the event as well as Crash crew for quite a number of years. Elizabeth has been Secretary of FOE for the last two years and has been a wonderful Gear Check Coordinator at the Horse Trials. Michael Cox has worked as Crash Crew at the Horse Trials for many years. Both of these families have been an integral part of both the FOE committee and the Horse Trials and their input and support has been invaluable. We thank them for their commitment and dedication to both the event and the committee and most importantly to our riders.

We would love the extra hands moving forward. I am happy to be Event Coordinator for 2019 but this will be my last year in this position (unless someone would like to take it on this year?) So, it will be important for succession planning for this event for other parents to look at stepping in/up to take on this role for 2020 and perhaps beyond.

Hooptime
On Wednesday 12 of September, a select few were chosen from the Boys’ Junior School to represent Tintern at the Hoop Time basketball competition. Before the competition took place the boys had a few training sessions with coach Mr Bonnyman where the boys worked on match simulation and working as a team which probably wasn’t needed because the boys were such a close bunch. On game day, the boys were feeling pretty good about their tactics and what was required.
We arrived at the venue (The Rings) and the new guys in the team were definitely surprised by the amount of people who came to watch us and the other teams play. When the boys saw the other teams they were definitely feeling their spirits starting to drop as the opposition had some very large boys.
It was time for the boys’ first game to get underway and they looked good early on. Not only were the on-court players playing well but the benches warmers were making contributions when they were put into the action. By halftime in Tintern’s game against Warrandyte the boys were up eight to nine. It was a really intense game because some of the boys on the Tintern side were good friends with some of Warrandyte’s players. With 6 seconds to go Noah shot a long-range basket to put us in front and gave us the eventual win.
The second game was against the much bigger Templestowe Park. They were a very talented team and got on top of us early. We never let our spirits drop and fought the game out but they were too strong and ended up going through the tournament undefeated.
The third game was an absolute cliff-hanger against Serpell Park. Jack started to assert himself inside the paint and Felix did a great defensive job on their dominant player. The scores see-sawed all game and unfortunately we were 1 point down when the siren went. This left us third in our group, just missing out on finals. All round we thought it was a great and entertaining day at the Rings and would absolutely go again.

News from the Girls’ Middle School
Term 3 has been a rich blend of many varied activities, from Cross-Country to camps, and Smoothie Bar to SoMe and celebrations of 100 days. We have had Big Day In, a Badging Ceremony and will have Battle of the Bands. There have been Music Concerts and incursions, Mathematics Competitions and the Melbourne Writers Festival. Factis Awards have been presented, and Family Planning ran some classes with Year 9 students. While I have only mentioned a selection of the opportunities and events which have been available, it is clear to see that the variety and number is amazing, and of course this is all over and above classes which continue to deliver curriculum. Educating our students, as you well know, is much more than the ATAR score they may receive at the end of their schooling. It is the culmination of all the numerous experiences they have had, each contributing to who they are and who they will be. Through the process of being involved in the life of this school, character, values and attributes are being shaped and developed.
On Friday 14 September, Year 7 students participated in our first ever Badging Ceremony. This class will graduate in 2023, and received a badge reflective of that year to wear proudly on their blazer. It was wonderful to see the entire Year 7 cohort on stage and being presented with their badge. In addition, the Combined Middle School Assembly, which began with a musical item from the Concert Band, featured Mr Fry addressing all Middle School students on ‘Own Self’ – a summary of the skills and attributes required for working in the 21st century and what students need to work on and develop in order to be well-equipped for the future.

This Friday, we have our annual Battle of the Bands to look forward to. Each year this is a highlight of the term, when the whole school has the opportunity to see and hear talent from across the year levels that we often did not even know was there. It is a fund-raising ‘footy day’ and students will be able to wear football colours as free dress and bring a gold-coin donation. Funds raised go to World Challenge students.
Recently, all Middle School students were introduced to the World Challenge Vietnam Trip 2019. This is the second time this trip is offered. Students who participated in 2017 had a life-changing experience. Events such as this give students the opportunity to work closely with those less fortunate than we are, to provide a service that will benefit the community well into the future. Students learn a great deal about themselves, others and the world outside their usual sphere. All families will be receiving an email about this event and I encourage you to carefully consider your child becoming involved in this unique event.
As we head into the holidays, I would like to wish all families a restful, refreshing and safe break. We look forward to your safe return on Tuesday 9 October.

News from the Boys’ Middle School
The final week of Term 3 is here and it’s been a great term for our Boys’ Middle School. In the recent weeks we held our cross-country at school followed by the divisional event held on Wednesday 12 September at Ruffey Lake Park in Doncaster. A large number of our boys made it through to this level and a lot of them equipped themselves really well amongst very strong competition. Blake Chrisfield of Year 8 ran really well to finish 9th, along with Sean Harris (Year 7) in 16th and Lochie Graham in Year 9 (13th).
That same afternoon we had our combined Middle Schools’ assembly where our Concert Band opened proceedings with an amazing piece of music. Following this Mr Fry spoke to the students about “Own Self” where he referenced the years to come for all students, especially our Year 9s with choices such as VCE, VET, IB, VCAL, apprenticeships, interns, university, TAFE, etc. His focus was on our students recognising that no matter which of these pathways they went down, the level of success they achieve will predominantly come down to how hard they work for it.
Our Factis Non-Verbis Awards for Term 2 were handed out at the assembly and the recipients this time around were:
- 7D: Harry Baugh
- 7E: Jayden Marsh
- 8D: Andrew Derham
- 8E: Kevin Zhang
- 9D: Craig Bonnington
- 9E: Patrick Dean
Our Year 8 boys recently had a presentation from an organisation called Sport & Life Training, or SALT titled ‘Time to Man Up’. This session was around the boys recognising what attributes they need to be developing to be men of strong character. The topics covered include: anger, addictions, popularity, respect and reputation, attitudes towards women, emotional intelligence, and having your mates back. It’s one in a number of sessions our boys will be having as they progress through Middle School around developing into good young men.
Our Year 7 boys had their final Big Brother session today which culminated in a pizza lunch where the Year 12 mentors took the opportunity to chat casually with their Year 7 buddies.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone return safely to school on Tuesday 9 October.

This is a fantastic achievement for these students, and we are pleased to share that Josh’s project has won the national prize for best Year 9 entry in the country! Well done, Josh!
Also, congratulations to the following students whose projects were awarded a distinction or credit in the 2018 Maths Talent Quest: Elijah Hanna, Haochen Zhang, Kristian Dass, Daniel Sun and Daniel Elias in Year 5, Annie Li and Yash Agrawal in Year 7, Adam Choong in Year 9 and Josephine Owen in the Year 10 – 12 category.
As a team, Tintern Grammar received three high distinctions, three distinctions and four credits; a well-deserved acknowledgment of all the student’s hard work and a fantastic achievement in a field of 684 Victorian entries. Well done to everyone involved in the 2018 Maths Talent Quest! You should be very proud of your achievements.

2018 CHOOSEMATHS Video Competition Presentation Ceremony
The 2018 CHOOSEMATHS video competition presentation ceremony was held on Friday 7 September at Leonda on the Yarra. Gavin Choong (Year 12), Joshua Choong (Year 9) and Adam Choong (also Year 9) submitted a video that was selected as one of the finalists and they won $1,000 and each received a medal. Their video explained the Mathematics behind the SIR model that is used to predict the spread of epidemics like Ebola. Watch their video here.
This is the third year that the CHOOSEMATHS competition has run and the theme for 2018 was ‘Our World Needs Maths’. Over 1,000 videos were submitted from around Australia and they were judged not only on their Mathematics, but also their creativity and teamwork. Ten teams were selected as finalists to attend the three-course meal and hear from speakers like ABC Science presenter Bernie Hobbs and Global Head of Inclusion and Diversity at BHP Billiton Fiona Vines. Gavin, Joshua and Adam were joined by their parents, grandparents, Steven Lo, Kiera Gooding and Julie Tillyer.
Congratulations Gavin, Josh and Adam on this fantastic result!

Year 12 VTAC Applications
Year 12 families are reminded that the timely VTAC applications closing date for Year 12 students is the 27 September at 5pm and this includes paying the fee of $36.00. SEAS and VCTAC Scholarship applications including the submission of all supporting documents closes on 12 October at 5pm, however, VTAC staff will verify any uploaded documents as “approved” or “rejected” in advance of the SEAS closing date if they are submitted by the 27 September. After this date, documents cannot be resubmitted if, for example, they are illegible.
Year 12 Students Intending to Apply Overseas
It is imperative that students make an appointment urgently if they are intending to apply overseas as a ‘buzzword’ must be given to UCAS applicants (applying to study in the United Kingdom) and transcripts prepared in the Careers Office. I would anticipate that students have planned their personal statements and had a discussion with staff who will be writing references for them.
Year 10 Work Experience 2019
Over the holidays, current Year 9 students are encouraged to find a Work Experience placement for the dates from Monday 17 to Friday 21 June 2019. Students are encouraged to speak with our Work Experience Co-ordinator Mrs Julie Ennor if they are having difficulties gaining a position.

News from Year 10
This week will be a busy one for the Year 10 students as a number of subjects are finalising assessments for the term. A copy of the presentation by the Semester 1 Medical Science students who attended the Royal Melbourne Hospital program called P.A.R.T.Y (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth) can be found at https://portal.tintern.vic.edu.au/homepage/19634/. The students have a presentation from Vic Roads this Wednesday called ‘Road Smart’ and information will be given to students about the change in pastoral rooms to the Visual Arts Centre while the building works are completed in the Science complex.
Optional METEC Driving Course and Level Two First Aid Course
An email has been sent home outlining two optional activities at the end of the year relating to the METEC driving course on the afternoon and evening of Wednesday 28 November and the follow up day course on Wednesday 5 December. There is also an optional Level 2 First Aid course held at school during the day on Monday 3 December and Tuesday 4 December.
The Year 10s are certainly looking forward to the holidays and I hope that the break is a safe one with time to recharge before the lead up to examinations.
News from Year 11
The Year 11 students are reminded that if they are taking a 3/4 subject they have their practice examinations the second week of the school holidays. Please ensure that they have read the timetable and come prepared with their school ID, School uniform, and all the required materials. These practice examinations are run under the same conditions that the actual examinations will be run later in the year, so it is best to become familiar with the requirements.
The students have been reminded that with every practice examination they take, they will increase their understanding of the structure of the actual exams, the style and range of questions, and thus prepare them to do as well as possible.
I wish them all good luck!
