Current IB Music students support the 2017 Award Recipients

Eight of our 2017 IB graduates were honoured at the IB Awards Ceremony last Wednesday evening at Deakin Edge, Federation Square in a tasteful formal celebration of their achievements. It was pleasing to see two of our current IB Year 12 musicians performing a number of musical interludes on stage with the Combined IB Orchestra throughout the evening. Holly Fryer (on Flute and Viola) and Steven Zhang (on Percussion) performed three works with students from Kardinia International College and Lauriston Girls School.

Musical treat this Wednesday 7 March

If you would like to hear 15 of our most talented musicians performing in a feast of beautiful music, come along to the CM Wood Centre this Wednesday 7 March 7.00pm to enjoy our ‘Preliminary Concerto Concert’. Fifteen students will perform one movement from a concerto with piano accompaniment. An external adjudicator then selects the best four, in their opinion, to continue on to perform at a showcase event in June, at which the four works are performed with orchestral accompaniment. This is always a wonderful musical event, featuring some outstanding musical moments.

Kelson Music Awards available in 2018

Music students in Years 5 to 12 may apply for the following Music awards:

Ilma Kelson Music Scholar Awards

Penelope Thwaites Music Awards
~ Performance of an Australian Composition Award (Years 5-12)
~ Original Composition Award (Years 7-12)

Australian Swimming Trials – Congratulations Rosie

Congratulations to Rosie Addison (Year 12) who competed in the Australian Swimming Trials on the Gold Coast over the weekend. Rosie swam exceptionally well against the best swimmers in the country and finished 8th in the 200m Backstroke final with a time of 2:18.32. Congratulations to Paul Haasbroek (Year 10) who competed in the U/17 decathlon at the National Junior Athletics Championships over the weekend at Lakeside Stadium. Courtney and Mitchell Snowball compete in XCO

Mitchell Snowball (Year 9) smashed the XC Eliminator last Friday night after racing the XC Relay earlier in the day.  His BMX skills were to his advantage, coming 3rd overall in open men and winning his age category, U15’s. He then proceeded to front up for his XC Olympic distance race the following morning and put in a hard race of 3 laps.  He came 21st out of 40 boys, with a sprint finish for 20th. Mitchell is now the U17 National Champion for Cross Country Eliminator.

Courtney Snowball (Year 12) also did us so proud. After riding a really strong technical race, Courtney came 3rd in the U19 Cross Country Olympic race.

Congratulations to Mia in Grade 5

Mia Heinrich (Grade 5) recently won champion owner rider in her category at Barastoc Horse of the Year.

Mia is off to the Grand Nationals in Sydney on 18 March to compete in Interschool Dressage and Showing events. This is a huge achievement and we wish Mia all the best with the competition.

From the Head of Senior College

As we move into the second half of Term 1 there is still plenty of action across our Senior College. The Year 10, 11 and 12 Conferences from 19 – 21 February were all a great success and I enjoyed visiting the Year 10 and 11 Camps and speaking with students about their experiences.

This week our School Leaders are preparing for International Women’s Day on Thursday 8 March. The theme for this year is ‘Press for change’, the leaders have activities and events planned to encourage discussion, and actions that will promote gender equality.

Year 12 Induction and Duces Assembly

On Friday 16 February, we recognised the achievements of our 2017 Duces, Emily Cowin (VCE Dux) and Brittany Read (IB and Overall Tintern Grammar Dux) at a special assembly. During this assembly our Year 12s were inducted and recognised as the leaders of our school. We were delighted to welcome back Kirsty McDonald (YG 2011) since graduating from Tintern Kirsty attended Swinburne University of Technology to study a Bachelor of Information Technology. She has since been working at Deloitte, a global professional services company, for three years as a senior consultant in their Technology Strategy and Architecture practice. Her warm, humorous and engaging address reflected on her time at Tintern, the factors contributing to her success, and her professional career. She strongly encouraged the Class of 2018 and the secondary school to try new things and step outside your comfort zone as well as to believe in yourself and your capabilities. We are very grateful that Emily, Brittany and Kirsty could join us for this assembly and for the insight they shared of their own experiences.

House Swimming Sports

With the House Swimming Carnival being held early in Term 1, it is a credit to all House Captains and staff who worked hard to ensure as many students as possible participate and make the competition a success. Well done to all staff and students who teamed together and showed positive House spirit.

There was lots of colour, some fantastic swimming on show and many students getting involved in events and tasks to support the competition. Congratulations to Butterss/Cross (boys) and Dann/Watt (girls) for winning their respective competitions.

Digital Citizenship

On Friday 16 February, we had an opportunity for students to take part in a Digital Citizenship activity run by our Senior College students. This session was an opportunity for students to have a voice and input into the direction of our Student Wellbeing and Agency Strategic Project with a particular focus on online activities. Student leaders from Year 10, 11 and 12 met with Heads of School to provide feedback and develop the structure of the day and facilitated activities with students. The sessions have provided us with some valuable insight into the positives of social media and technology as well as some of the challenges experienced by individuals and groups of students. It was terrific to see students engage in the process and provide some suggestions and strategies that we will work with them to develop over the coming 6 months.

SMS Absence Notifications

As of Monday 5 February, parents will receive an SMS notification if their son/daughter is absent without prior notification. It is important that parents notify the school as soon as possible if their child is away. Parents can phone 9845 7722 or email absence@tintern.vic.edu.au.

Recent Sporting Success in Year 10

Congratulations to Corey Dickson for his recent success in the Victorian Junior Athletics Competition. Corey competed in the 5000 metre Walk and won the gold medal in a time of 24 minutes and 23 seconds which was 3 seconds off his personal best. He also achieved a personal best in the 3000 metre run.

Congratulations to Paul Haasbroek who competed in the Australian Championships Decathlon competition on the weekend. Decathlon consists of 10 events which requires a massive personal effort to complete the following over the two-day competition.

News from Year 11

The Year 11 Camp has come and gone and the students reported that they had a fantastic time.  Most wished it could have been longer, which is always a good sign. One of our guest speakers teaches and practices mindfulness and meditation. This presented a good overview to the practice, and we have begun to implement during roll call in the mornings. While not compulsory, some students have enjoyed the time before the day begins, listening to short meditations and focusing on “being in the moment”.

In other news, the Year 11s are about to start their Initiative project, where they develop, organise, and run a series of activities over Term 2 with students from the Junior School. Scavenger hunts, outdoor games, and group activities provide an opportunity for all students to mix. This happens over lunchtime and has always been a highlight for both the younger students and the Year 11s.

News From Year 12

The Year 12s have three weeks of Term 1 to go, with a number of SACs and Internal Assessments to be completed between now and the holidays.  The importance of maintaining healthy eating and sleeping patterns throughout this period has been highlighted in a number of presentations during the Year 12 Conference, particularly Dr Michael Carr Gregg.  Notes from his presentation can be found on the Year 12 portal page.

Many students are involved in the School’s musical, South Pacific, whether as a member of the cast or the backstage crew.  We wish all students the best of luck with the production.  South Pacific opens on 21 March for its preview performance, with tickets available through this link.

Students are reminded that they need to be on the school grounds by 8.30am each morning to ensure that they attend roll call and do not miss out on any relevant information disseminated during this time.

International Baccalaureate Awards Ceremony 2018

Each year the International Baccalaureate Awards Ceremony is held at Deakin Edge Federation Square, Melbourne. This event honours those students who achieve IB Diploma scores of 40 and above. The fact that such a result is acknowledged by a ceremony indicates the magnitude of these students’ achievement. This year the ceremony was held on Wednesday 21 February and Tintern Grammar students Ada Chen, Eliza Mignot, Josephine Owen, Sophie Paul, Brittany Read, Karly Rosenbrock, Sabrina Wang and Alison Yang were recipients of awards.

The evening was well attended by past students, their families and staff members from all 19 participating schools. All musical items were performed by an IB Representative Orchestra and Mr Brad Fry, Mrs Alison Bezaire and I were delighted to see Holly Fryer and Steven Zhang (Year 12 IB students) lending their considerable expertise to this wonderful joint venture.

Mr Stuart Jones, Head of IB World Schools, Asia Pacific, International Baccalaureate Organisation, travelled from Singapore for the ceremony. He delivered a message of congratulations to the IB graduates. Mr Jones observed that the Diploma Programme is a course of study like no other, which developed discerning thinkers and knowledge creators who learnt to achieve balance in their lives. He urged the graduates to be citizens of the world rather than just clients. The guest speaker was Taylen Furness, a past IB student of the host school, Kardinia International College. Since leaving school in 2008, he has completed an Arts Degree at The University of Melbourne and a scriptwriting course at the Victorian College of the Arts, written a musical and is currently in his third year of a medical degree. He also played violin in the IB Representative Orchestra. In his thoughtful and inspiring speech, Taylen reflected on the IB life and the importance of vision and ideals, the ability to see things differently in a complex way and to think in an open-minded and creative way. He showed that we can solve the problems of the world by approaching life in this way. Taylen’s experiences and achievements, as well as his observations and advice, reminded us of the considerable benefits of the IB Diploma in which risk-taking, reflection and respect for others are part of the learner profile.

Tintern Grammar has been running the IB Diploma Programme for 26 years, with great success. It is an important part of our culture as well as a highly desirable academic pathway in Years 11 and 12. We regularly have our past IB students return to the school to speak at information nights and assemblies where they remark upon the many benefits of the programmes which include excellent preparation for university study and a balanced life. An IB Information Evening will be held in late Term 2.

New Physics and Science laboratory is a real hit!

The new Physics laboratory has now been open for four weeks. In addition to our four VCE and IB Year 11 and 12 Physics classes, a number of Year 7 to 9 Science classes have the occasional lesson timetabled in the lab as well. The wonderful space, versatility and modern facilities of the new lab are appreciated by students and teachers alike and I would agree with Mr Fry, who has the pleasure of teaching 7A in there, that it is the best laboratory we have taught in.

The Year 7 students have been designing their own experiments this week. 7D was very happy to be able to make use of the flexibility offered by the Physics laboratory when they were gathering data for research questions such as “how does the type of ball affect the height it bounces back to?”, “How does the distance a marble is rolled from affect the movement of a group of marbles it hits?” and “How does the mass of salt dissolved in water affect the time it takes for the water to boil?”

Scienceworks Visit

On February 27 February the Year 5 boys travelled to Scienceworks to visit the Planetarium, The Lightning Show and the class session: Earth, Moon and the Sun.

The boys enjoyed learning about lightning, electricity and safety in the Lightning Room. In the Planetarium, we learnt about the earth’s tilt and then viewed the Melbourne night sky and some of the constellations and planets we can see in our night sky.

We then had a play at the exhibitions, including the simulation of a space shuttle and gravity on different plants.

Finally, we completed a class session of the size of the planets and how we get day and night and the seasons of the year.

It was a fabulous day and reinforced many of the concepts about Space we have learned this term.

International Women’s Day

Our Boys’ Junior School Assembly yesterday provided us with the opportunity to celebrate and discuss this year’s International Women’s Day. We specifically discussed each of the action points that are part of this year’s theme, PressforProgress

We highlighted a number of facts on the information sheet to the right

to discuss Maintaining a Gender Parity Mindset, and then spoke about female

representation in our own parliament (32%) and those of other countries such as

New Zealand (39%), the US (20%) and The Netherlands (36%)

Challenge Stereotypes and Bias saw us discussing language and comments that are

‘stereotypical’; “…you kick like a girl…” (which while designed to be a put down, in

this day and age, is actually a compliment!), “..man up..”, “…you’re screaming like a

girl..”, “..boys don’t cry..”

We highlighted the list of ‘boys and girls’ party themes that can be found on many

Party Shop websites, and spoke about the ‘limitations’ and negative messages these

themes send; boys are adventurous and heroic, girls are fantasy and sparkles!

Stereotypes can prevent both genders from fulfilling their aspirations and limit their

potential, as per the Hugh Jackman experience.

We celebrated women’s achievements by discussing Amelia Earhart, as both a

pioneer and a courageous woman, who stated that “Women must try to do things as men have tried.

When they fail, their failuremust be but a challenge to others.”

We were then delighted to have Louise Smith, who completed her VCE last year, as our This Is Me

special guest. Louise initiated and led our Big Brother Big Sister program last year, and continues to oversee

it this year. The program connects all of our Year 7 students with a Year 12 ‘brother’ or ‘sister’. Lousie was

also a School leader, is a passionate member of the Wooloomai Surf Life Saving Club, is studying paramedics

and has always demonstrated courage, resilience, strength, positivity and respect for herself and others.

She spoke about her life experiences, her friendships, her passion to ‘have a go’, and how she coped with the

tragic passing of her father when she was in Year 10.

Her inspiring story was a wonderful example of positive visibility of women.

We were also joined by Jack Read and Ruby Ameer, two of Year 12 leadership team, who complemented Louise’s presentation with their own examples of respect for others.

I hope that all families will continue many of these Assembly discussions in their own homes, not just during International Women’s day this Thursday, but continually.

Kind regards,

Club Tinwood Pool Party!

Last Tuesday afternoon was a perfect day for our first Club Tinwood event for the year… a Pool Party and BBQ!

The 80 boys and girls stood out in their fluro pink tops. A positive ‘sign of the times’ that there wasn’t one ‘negative, stereotypical’ comment about the colour!!

Thanks to all staff who attended and assisted with cooking the BBQ, supervising at the pool and games sessions. We all had a great evening!

Club Tinwood is an optional after-school activity group for girls and boys in Year 3 to 6 that meets throughout the school year. The club complements our Parallel Learning model by encouraging friendships across the Junior School and bringing our older Junior Schools’ children together outside of the classroom, providing an opportunity to mix and socialise whilst taking part in a range of fun activities, which are organised and supervised by our Junior Schools’ staff.

We are happy but it is time to draw. My Art teacher, Mrs Greco says, “In this class, you need to draw a self-portrait.”   We start drawing. Some people draw beautifully but my drawing is ‘so-so’. Then we went to eat lunch. Today, I bought my lunch from the canteen kitchen. In the afternoon class, we needed to write a story but I am still practising my English. I wrote a long story and my teacher gave me some ideas. She talked with me and that made me happy. My friends helped me with my iPad to make a nice picture and we always play a game in the playground. At 3.30pm my brother and I went home. We played many games and drew pictures. My mother said, “Elina, your picture is beautiful!” She made dinner and we ate it. At 9.40pm, my sister Quincy said, “You need to go to sleep or read a book.” I decided to read a book but I was too tired after 10 minutes and decided to sleep. I lay in my bed and said to myself, “This was a happy day!”

You’re in Good Hands

Fantastic Friends is a peer support program offered over the last nine years to the girls in Years 5 and 6. A group of girls were selected and trained for half a day as ‘Fantastic Friends’ in conflict resolution strategies and peer support skills involving the use of role-play, group brainstorming and personal reflection.

The girls enthusiastically and selflessly give up some of their time to assist others, particularly the younger girls, by helping fellow students develop resilience and self-confidence.

The girls also help resolve minor disagreements as well as offering friendship and care for the girls. The Fantastic Friends show tremendous initiative and maturity in undertaking this special responsibility. As a result of being involved in the program, our past Fantastic Friends have grown in confidence, gaining and developing conflict resolution strategies which will be valuable and worthwhile for many years to come.

Boys’ Middle School News

I have just returned from one of the most amazing weeks I’ve had at work. As hard as it is to leave my wife and young family for a week, I must admit I do love going on camp with the students. I was fortunate enough to be part of the Year 8 team this year that travelled to Myrtleford, which is situated near the base of Mount Buffalo. This camp has our boys rock climbing and abseiling, riding a 240-metre flying fox, sliding down a 7-metre vertical drop slide, riding bikes into town, as well as hiking to the top of Mount Buffalo and camping alongside Lake Catani. I was great to see them work cooperatively together, to support and encourage each other, and to see them achieve some amazing personal goals and accomplishments. I am incredibly proud of them for their efforts this week.

I am just as proud of the Year 9s after speaking to the staff who accompanied our boys on the hikes along the Great Ocean Walk. This is a physically challenging camp with warm weather, heavy packs and undulating terrain. All staff have mentioned how impressed they were with the effort and determination of their group, as well as the support they provided to each other. This is a camp where they can look back on with a real sense of accomplishment and fulfilment.

I would like to wish the cast of our school musical, South Pacific, all the best as they get ever-so-closer to their performance days. It is the culmination of a lot of very hard work and commitment, and is always something they remember well after school has finished. It will be an amazing show and I encourage all members of our community to come along for one of the shows.

About South Pacific:

Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war.

When Nellie, a nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile, she learns that the mother of his children was an island native. Unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, she refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lieutenant Joe Cable denies himself the future he wants with a Tonkinese girl because of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission, Nellie realises that she must seize her own chance of happiness, and is forced to confront her prejudices.
